These movies are made so much more enjoyable with your reactions, I love it, thank you :) All right, a wall of text incoming. Firstly The Hobbit is much simpler an more straightforward than Lotr and it was written by Tolkien as a children book. He did not have a fully completed the idea of what his world would yet be. That is why there is a difference in tone. I like it a lot but Lotr in tone and maturity is much more of my taste, but there is still a lot of good in these movies too. Goblins are Orcs, but Tolkien called them goblins in the Hobbit because it is a children's book. "The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many" it is an extremely important notion that the first act of Bilbo was of pity and he spared the life of Gollum when so many would kill just to have it, even more important in the books. The sword glow is imprinted onto the swords by their makers. In Tolkien's universe creating powerful objects means that whoever makes them gives a part of themselves into those objects and the Elves that made the swords had a burning hatred for the Orcs and that shows up as a glow of the swords. The most skillful Elven smith made objects so astonishing that the gods themselves envied them, these are the 3 Silmarils. I'll not tell much more of them since it would spoil the Silmarillion. But he put so much of himself into these objects that he could not create more of them. It is a really cool and unique idea that you have to really give from yourself, from your soul, your being in order to create really powerful objects, and the more powerful soul the more powerful objects can be created. That is also how Sauron made the One Ring, he poured much of himself into it and that is why the ring has its own will, because it essentially is Sauron, or a part of him. He created the other rings the 7 and the 9 (with help and deception) in order to control the other races, Dwarves and Humans. Dwarves are too resilient to become like the Nazgul but the 7 dwarf rings have their own negative effects, greed and fierce jealousy of gold, something the Dwarfs have a problem to begin with. The 3 Elfs who were given the Elven rings realized immediately that they were a trap when they put them on and removed them then and there. Once Sauron was defeated by Isilidur cutting the ring off then they could use the 3 because Sauron never touched those, but they still were under the influence of the One ring and everything accomplished with them would have been lost if Sauron had reclaimed the One. When we meet Frodo in Lotr he is 33 and Bilbo is 111. When Frodo leaves the Shire with the ring he is in his 50s. Bilbo held the ring for 60 years but the ring had not woken yet and so it did not have so strong effect on Bilbo than we saw with Frodo. And that is also why Bilbo can use the ring more freely and the spirit realm is much more calm when he has the ring on. I probably forgot many things but it is quite difficult to explain the world that Tolkien spent his entire life creating :D and more importantly I don't want to spoil the enjoyment of learning about this world and its characters.

I think what is confusing you is that it was established that the ring essentially stops the aging process so if this is “young Bilbo” then he should still be young in Lord of the Rings. Which is true. There is some inconsistency there especially with having the opening showing bilbo being much older. But in lord of the rings they did talk about how bilbo had the ring for 60 years and this movie said “60 years ago” when it flashed back to young Bilbo to start his story.

Smaug! "My armour is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane... And my breath... Death!"

Randolph Tirazona

First 1 of the 3 is the best in my opinion
