It’s one of the reasons that they almost get better and better the more you watch them. You notice tiny little details that somehow make you appreciate them even more than you already did… which says a lot.

The ball (Palantir) is a "seeing stone" old communication device. Pippin is curious and because he is he needs to know. The Palantirs' communication line has been taken over by Sauron, as he captured one long ago. This is why Sarumon and Denethor had changed. Sauron fed them lies, etc. making them believe he was all powerful.
