LOTR part 2 watch-along :)

LOTR part 2 watch-along :)

Comments

I think I have seen this movie like 20th time or so, and some 5th reaction maybe. What I like the most about it NOW is how this episode sets the mood - the epicness of the world, the pathos, the majesty and beauty - thing like Elrond being thousands years old, statues beyond belief, vastness of Moria, conflict of Gandalf against Balrog. For most first time viewers, unless they are totally ignorant, it shows that these movies and this world is a class of its own.

@ Chris Illsley - I mostly agree with you. Overall, this was a sweet, beautiful, and heartwarming reaction, filled with an enormous amount of compassion, which is, in my opinion, the single most important quality of any human being. P.S.: Why mostly, and not fully agreed? Connecting with the characters, usually means (just) empathy, while "feeling" a character requires compassion :)

Prometheus

And we love that ^^

Great reaction! This first movie does throw a ton of information at you (especially the extended edition). What is really more important than all the names and places is that you connect with the characters and feel the emotions and that’s certainly what you did! Can’t wait to watch these next two movies along with you as well!!

BEFORE YOU WATCH THE SECOND MOVIE, THIS IS A MUST READ (!!!) [***NO SPOILERS***] To (fully) understand certain specifics, which may yet arise, you need to know the following: -Middle Earth lies to the East (think of it as Europe, at least in terms of geography), whilst far to the West lies another continent (in terms of geography, think of Northern America), all of it united into a single realm, called VALINOR (!!!) - which is basically (in some ways) almost like ''heaven upon earth'', ruled by some sort of demi-gods (or (perhaps) slightly less accurate: supreme archangels) This information should be quite enough for now, I believe, at least in terms of the various specifics of the lore. Some may argue, that this information is not really all that important, but I mention it nonetheless, to give you a bit of additional insight. ***FAR LESS IMPORTANT (feel free to skip this part, as it may be dangerously boring): You need to understand, that Tolkien's bibliography (basically, how much he has written), is probably incomparably more extensive than virtually anyone's. A lot of his works were edited by his son, and published posthumously, and if you were to read all of them (assuming you would understand everything you read, although, I think no one is able to understand it all the first time around), it would probably take you weeks (unrealistically assuming, you would read 24/7, with no pauses). We don't really know how much of Tolkien's works remains unpublished, although in terms of words, I daresay 'the majority'. Oh, by the way, when Tolkien first started to write about events happening thousands of years before LOTR, he wrote them in Elvish, the language, you hear in the movies. To be very liberal around the definition of this, Tolkien overall created two (Elven) languages, which are virtually "complete" (grammar & vocabulary), whilst he created quite a few others, too (although, he did not entirely completed them).

You are more than welcome, however, in all honesty, you DO NOT need to thank me, after all, I really like explaining LOTR, and in extremely rare cases, such as this one, I not only like, but LOVE explaining it. MY OPINION OF YOUR REACTION: You're intelligent, and it is very clear, that you want to catch every single detail, still, you DO follow the story incredibly well (I think that's a fact, even if you disagree with me :D), especially for a first time viewer with no prior knowledge of LOTR or Tolkien whatsoever. My favourite part, however, is your emotional response - I am not sure I even have words to properly describe it. I would describe it as heartfelt, beautiful, pure, and sincere. Thank you :) :) ;)

Prometheus

Im going to rewatch the movie throughly one more time with all this information in mind so I can better understand the story. So much to take in but so worth it once everything comes together. Thank you!!!!

Im excited and nervous 😭

First of all I appreciated your very sincere reaction even if your reference to Harry Potter made me cringe a little ;) I saw it, when it came out at the cinema, I was 20 years old. But I read the books around 9-11 years old in the early 90s and with a book you have more time to read and remember the names and details it's a bit embarrassing at my age to watch the reactions of a young person like you, I find. But I like your sincerity and I do this above all to improve my understanding in English (no, it'sn't a joke ^^) I have a little advice, stop the automatic led lamp, we can see very clearly when you make cuts thx

la chaise

:) :) :) How can I argue, haha? :D

Prometheus

True, however, the scene that shows how VERY FAR everyone was from Gandalf, would make this all the more dangerous ... that scene lasts for such a brief moment, it is nearly impossible to catch, and the viewer might think they were far closer to him, which is not the case

Prometheus

Now, here we go ... A VERY SHORT LOTR GUIDE for YOU (**NO SPOILERS**): PART ONE The MOST IMPORTANT things to remember: **CHARACTERS** -the two hobbits who were taken captive are Merry and Pippin (these are their shortened names, just stick with those for now ;) ) -the name of the dwarf is Gimli -YES, the name of the elf (the guy with the bow and arrows, haha), IS indeed Legolas :) -the name of the character, who resists the ring, just after Boromir succumbs to it (played by Viggo Mortensen) is Aragorn (many wrongly call him Aragon) --> Aragorn (ALSO known as Elessar (!!!) by the Elves)), is a descendant of Isildur (the prince who cut the Sauron's hand in the prologue), which gives him a claim to the throne of "Gondor" (!!!), which, as he already stated, doesn't want -SAURON (presented as "the Eye") could be in many ways compared to Satan in Christianity ---> PLEASE, do NOT confuse him with Saruman (I am very glad you didn't so far, so I guess we're covered here :) ) This much for the most relevant characters (those you may or may not have been slightly confused about) :)

Prometheus

Great reaction! :) I will give you some explanations in the next comment. Hopefully, they will not only help you understand the first movie better, but will ALSO give you a better understanding of the the second and the third one - no spoilers (goes without saying, I hope). We all appreciate you watching the extended edition :)

Prometheus

they didnt help gandalf because orcs were closer and were shooting arrows, it was too dangerous to get to him
