The Little Mermaid
Added 2022-09-13 13:59:12 +0000 UTCI've not cared about the live action remakes Disney has been putting out, but seeing the recent teaser for The Little Mermaid that came out I wanted to do a quick sketch since I can't get over how gorgeous her tail design is.
This was also a perfect opportunity to redraw something from around July 2019 when it was announced that Halle Bailey was playing the titular mermaid Ariel:
I've made my thoughts known back then, but I figured I can share them again here: As someone who's grown up with the 1989 animated film version of Ariel, there was a slight jarring of my preconceived idea of what The Little Mermaid looks like.
But I'd like to think I'm an open-minded person. Surely there's no restriction on what "race" a mermaid would be. Lots of cultures in the past and present have had mermaid myths, and the "original" design of Ariel of red hair and green tail was to help her standout from the underwater environment as well as from the blonde mermaid from "Splash".
I have checked and thought Halley Bailey does sound pretty good, and hopefully she'll do well in this role.
Speaking of which, my main concern is whether the film is going to be any good. The basic Hans Christian Andersen/Disney plot would likely remain (with the almost mandatory female empowerment message nailed in), but whether they'll make changes to the story, setting and time period we'll have to see, along with the rest of the cast lineup.
I've not seen any of the recent live-action remakes, but this one I might just consider. We'll find out when the movie gets released.
