Game of Thrones Book Club #1

LOL, two chapters! But fun! I really always love to hear people pick out lines that stood out to them. You picked some good ones. The prologue is one of the more important chapters in the book, especially once it gets down to revealing the Others (and yes, I prefer that, although White Walkers is also fine). I think I already said this in Discord, but the way they are described here is important: as shadows, pale, white as milk. Why that is important is something for the next livestream, once you get past Daenerys' third chapter, because then we can glue some first things about the overarching storyline together, the one that will involve Bran, Jon, and Daenerys (undoubtedly the most important characters). It's also interesting to note how the Other that fights Weymar Royce approaches him, but that's more for theorizing after book five. There are two lines in Bran's chapter that I like a lot because they gives us much foreshadowing for Jon: When speaking about Jon's pup Ghost, there's "Bran thought it curious that this pup alone would have opened his eyes while the others were still blind." This is mirrored in Jon, who is the only one who's eyes are open enough to see where the real threat is coming from: he understands (obviously this is later in the story, but since we've seen this on the show I think it's fair game) the immense danger the Others are posing, which renders all this juggling for the throne insignificant. And there's also this part: “He must have crawled away from the others,” Jon said. “Or been driven away,” their father said, looking at the sixth pup. This again mirrors Jon future: he is 'crawling' away from the others by leaving to join the Night's Watch. But also driven away, because he feels out of place in a way. As he thinks to himself in his own first chapter, "what place could a bastard hope to earn?" And later developments only strengthen this idea of being driven away. Comments on the other chapters I will give after you discussed them, hopefully in the YouTube stream. I actually first started reading the books in late 2003, upon a recommendation by a friend when I was still obsessed with Lord of the Rings. I finished the first three books rather quickly, then had to wait a year before the fourth came out, then SIX years for the fifth to finally see the light of day. And now we are waiting for almost a decade... Hope the hole is fixed!
