This is always a big challenge and I’m happy to share my knowledge and experience with those of you who want to improve their photography skills and/or support my photography the most by joining my VIP elite tier.
In this case there was strong sunlight coming from the corner of the window which posed a multitude of problems. If I wanted the windows and views in the background, I had to light the body of the model with another source, otherwise it would be too dark (image 3). Alternatively, if I managed to get the correct exposure on the model, the background would become overexposed and would be completely washed out, so no point in using the window!
So I decided to try my Canon speed light - a very powerful flashgun but instead of directing it onto the model, I directed it towards the ceiling. That diffuses the light and limits reflections on the glass. The diffused light then is sufficient to light the model. It worked - image 2. However, flash usually gives you a blueish tint which can be mitigated through editing. Another problem in this case were the windows on the building opposite that reflected the flash and me - once again this can be addressed through editing.
The last problem that needed addressing was bird poo on the other side of the window!
The end result is in the first image. Not bad, I think, given all the challenges.
