Not Having Fun in Terraria

I have gotten so overwhelmingly bored with Terraria that I'm dropping the series. Starting now, people in Nominating and Voter Fraud tiers have 7 days to nominate a new game for a series. Send the game via Patreon's DMs and I'll add it to the list. Don't recommend anything similar to Terraria.

Thanks to everyone who wrote riddles, there were some really good and fun ones. Unfortunately, this game casts such a wide net that there's no way to cover everything through riddles. There were no riddles that related to finding certain ingredients, so I consulted the wiki and decided that this wasn't worth my time.

My biggest issue with the game is how grindy everything is. I'm sick of mining, I'm sick of crafting, I'm sick of building, and I'm even pretty sick of combat. I have absolutely no interest in completing quests for NPCs (or raising their happiness), I don't like re-summoning bosses, and I don't want to explore anymore, seeing how long it takes to get back to where I was after dying. I want to get to the fun parts of the game, but it takes 5 minutes minimum to do anything. I wish the game was fun, but it wasn't. Hopefully next series is a better time.

Comments

Yeah, terraria is a time commitment. You have to be ready to put a lot of time into doing the same thing over and over again.

Mathematica

That is very fair. Even as a person who Loves terraria thoroughly, its very much not for everyone, and even I prefer to play with a large amount of QOL mods to speed up the grind. Good luck with your future endeavours, love your content.

Dodge

RIP, Terraria just does not have much substance

Koin

:( Joined patreon for this series

Cosmin

Honestly im not sure why people voted on it. its a good game but not for you. i'm knew this series would flop but let voters see it first. trying to make the game into something its not will result in a boring slogfest. glad to see it dropped

Tarmagain

Terraria is not fun if you know nothing about it when starting, even with guides and the wiki you are bound to hit a few walls in progression, not a game for everyone indeed

Miguel Souto Costa

ngl i thought it was a cool idea with the riddles at first, but it lost its novelty quickly for me, totally understandable why you would drop it

Tsuchiko

Understandable. I hated Terraria my first few attempts. It took playing with friends for the first time to make the experience fun for me.

Michael P Joyal

I have put hundreds of hours into terraria and absolutely love the game, but the part I hate the most is starting a new game. The early game grind is so boring and takes so long, especially on harder difficulties. I was surprised He even played Terraria and although I had fun watching him play it, This just doesn't seem to be his kind of game (from what little I know, not trying to assume.)

Skovville

RIP

Michael

Fair enough

dmx0987654321

yeah, for me expert is normal difficulty, but I have 800 hours of terraria trivia in me

Adam Magee

So long terraria it was fun

Me

dang, one of my favorite games shelved, tho you are not wrong, alot of work has to be put in early to enjoy the game

Starmitzy

I disagree, to some degree. The base game is quite shallow, and the expanded game requires a lot of effort for minimal payoff. Maybe it'd be fun to have a few episodes, but I doubt it would make a good long series.

Godlyvex5

Say if anyone is in the nominating tier and wants to put in a last minute nomination, I feel like Tyler may enjoy Noita.

Awbluefy

It's a shame - expert mode was a definite mistake unfortunately, unlike a lot of games it genuinely means what it says, and makes the game a lot more grindy and focused on expoliting mechanics. Happy you tried it, enjoyed the series, best of luck finding a new game you like for the slot.

Zelanious

You should've started on beginner difficulty then man idk what else to tell you small world beginner difficulty and don't make your supporters drag you along with shitty rhymes let us just give you hints if you want help directly from us don't dismiss an entire game off sheerly your own dumb way to play it you wouldn't go play elden ring like that but you set yourself up on the biggest world highest difficulty with 0 knowledge of the game atleast admit its your own fault and not poor game design or grindy nature

Paxton Sweet

Any word from the man himself?

Johannes

I agree. Not enjoying a game doesn't mean it sucks. Terraria has a very vibrant community that loves it dearly.

ThomasR

I joined the Patreon to see this series but I get that it didn't work out quite as intended. I've sunk many hours into terraria yet I constantly check the wiki for recipes and stats. But I love your other content too so I'll try to stick around for a while

ThomasR

I'm not surprised by this. I was also bored my this series, despite your very effective editing and best attempts to keep it interesting. I don't know why people voted for this game in the first place, it's just not your kind of game. I'm excited to see what comes next!

Ben Anderson

Same! I hope he isn't shy from bailing from games in the future after giving them a fair try too. Why I loved the series I don't mind it's gone. I watch for Tyler not for the game lol

Mush

It was definitely interesting series but I could have seen writing on the wall after a couple of episodes since you haven't made almost any progress. It's a good decision too, it would probably be boring to watch this series for 30-40 eps or more. When I played terraria I wouldn't be able to do it without mods and knowing the path of what steps I need to take to finish. There is a mod that let's you mine whole vein of ore and one that gives you all bosses as checklist. Without those two I can see how terraria can be extremely boring. I'm excited to see what the next game will be ^^

Mush

I believe he already has a playthrough of this on the channel

Oscar Barnes

Yeah, that's about right. I think it's a really cool game, but it's very slow, very diffent from your usual games, and usually very bad for making videos. I have trouble recommending it to people that do play these kinds of games because of how little it explains and how repetitve/grindy it gets for some things

Andy G

stevens sosege

Choddus

It was definitely a fresh take on Terraria that I enjoyed, but it was a bit sketch from the start since it's so far removed from the usual games you play. Glad that you're up front about this, and I honestly don't mind. I'd rather you have fun while recording content and I think everyone else is of the same opinion.

Owgla

Frost punk rises

Dogdayboy

Fun fact, he already played and completed Celeste. The playthrough is on his vod channel

Nick Knack

right with you on that

Dxlls

I hope this doesn't taint his opinion of doing things outside his comfort zone as I feel like he'd enjoy Celeste

Ganpan14O

Yeah I think in the first open voting phase it would be nice if he had a pool of 5 games he wanted to play separate from the regular pool. The most voted of Tyler's picks would then go up against the 2 most voted games from the Patreon pool.

Ryan Scott

I absolutely agree. I was so confused by the voting to the point I kinda want to know who is voting for this stuff. Like are there a bunch of kids with their parents credit card voting for games that already have tons of content on YouTube and twitch that are polar opposites of Tyler's play style?

Ryan Scott

I never understood why people voted for Terraria. It's nothing like the games you usually play. I absolutely love Terraria but I'd rather watch you play something more to the puzzle side or maybe a rogue-like.

Lua Amaterasu

Understandable, I think you would have enjoyed ot a lot more not zoomed in an on Normal mode, at least leading up to this point, but I also don't blame you for struggling and not knowing what to do. You do have to stick with the game for a decent while before it really gets going as a new player, I think that's one of the game's biggest weaknesses. I came to Patreon for the Terraria, and am staying for the Factorio and future endeavours!

Garmfielf

Yeah. I understand. I stopped watching the series in chapter 3, so…

Pideperdonus 2

While the game is a departure from what you typically play, I can't help but feel like the biggest problem with your experience was the result of playing melee while simultaneously zoomed in by 300%. Being zoomed in that far makes it near impossible to avoid anything because you have no time to react, and melee only compounds those issues. To be honest, now that I think about it, I'm legitimately surprised Terraria challenge content creators haven't milked "can i beat terraria zoomed in" to death

Hexafish

An oof-moment if I've ever seen one. Tbh, I kinda saw this coming when the first episode dropped. Terraria is not a very fun game if you don't know what to do, and the setup was specifically that you wouldn't. Starting on expert mode was definitely an additional frustration. It takes some familiarity to beat expert bosses. I don't think Terraria is too grindy; you inevitably gather resources you need while exploring. True grinding is optional if you desire specific drops, and only very few times is it necessary to progress. Chlorophyte being one example. I think we were all hoping you could have the same fun we had with it, but if exploration isn't your thing, it is bound to fall flat for you.

TheFunfighter

Aww. Fair enough tho. I personally bounced off of Terraria the first time I tried it. Also going straight for expert mode maybe wasn't the wisest choice, it's a brutal step-up in difficulty. Anyway, new game. I liked this series called "Crazy Machines" as a kid and I think that's more up your alley. Though I can't speak for the newer titles https://store.steampowered.com/search/?developer=Fakt%20Software

Wackytoaster

Tbh, this doesn't really surprise me. It was weird how there wasn't anyone, like an editor or fellow youtuber, to organize the riddles. To only base which ones are seen by likes? To disorganized. To further step things up would be to have a modified version of the game. One that somehow gates progress based on solving riddles? Meh, can't really plan on those hypotheticals. Oh well. Have you heard of a game called Infinifactory. That's a puzzle game that has kicked my butt in the past.

Joel

I would love to see Tyler optimizing every bit of city in Cities Skylines

Mateusz Hinca

I love terraria, I have over 900 hours in the game but I can definitely agree it's not for everyone especially if you don't use the wiki which you said you don't want to do, best of luck to you and the next series people choose, could be interesting if you came back to it but with a duo partner that has more knowledge than you in the game

Bogdan100pink

+1

RobinGugel

Understandable and reasonable. I did like the videos you've put out on it so far, but yeah, at this pace, it would've been probably a year whole series, if not more, most of which would've been just filler/grind anyway.

Reptilian Vladeo-Z

Same here, I'm glad Terraria is over so there might be something I want to watch next time.

MinerUser

Personally, I'm not a terraria fan so I wasn't watching. I'm glad this subscription might bring me value outside of just supporting one of my favourite creators.

Jack93885

Tyler, you have the honesty I wish everyone had. This is why I support you on Patreon. Thank you for being a role model :)

Andrew Fortney

Eh, totally fine by me, I honestly only watched 1 episode 😅 Not the kind of content I subscribed for, y'know? I really enjoyed Factorio, tho!

804R

Terraria is definitely a different style of game from what you seem to enjoy and typically play, so its completely ok and understandable if you weren’t having fun. We want to see content you enjoy making, so if its not fun for you it probably wont be as fun for us. To the people down here hating on Terraria, its not everyone’s cup of tea but that does not make it a terrible game. It is a grindy game that takes a long time to achieve the crazy stuff in the game, especially if you have no clue what you’re getting into. Again though, its ok that you didn’t have fun playing the game Tyler. You have my full support no matter what content you produce, as long as you are happy and having fun. Keep up the good work!!

Blakes World

Play hollow knight

Kinglue

I even bought the game, because it looked fun. But it wasn’t (for me) 😆 I respect your honesty, and don’t stress yourself. I would support this channel even without patreon rewards.

Johannes

Sorry to hear you wherent having fun, but hey i'd rather watch you play a game youre having fun with than to keep playing one you dont like. So im ok with this. Happy to support you either way!

Awbluefy

I think you did the right thing here, if you dont enjoy the game most people wont enjoy watching you play it. Im fine with it

Lieutenant Dan

Dude terraria is my favorite game of all time. And I could totally tell Tyler was just not enjoying it at all and honestly good on him for saying that he’d rather do something else. It’ll definitely be a better experience for everyone if he’s showcasing a game he enjoys playing.

mclions18

It might have been a little better if you tried normal instead of expert and created a small world. For the first playthrough expert makes the game leagues more frustrating since you die a lot and it takes a while to respawn. It's not meant for new players and it's a shame you had to play a game you don't even like in such a frustrating way. Would not have fixed others problems, though

Rognin

left the patreon because wasn't sure terraria would be a good fit, but we back now :D

Sage H.

i 100% agree and ive been trying to explain that to people for years now

Caleb B

i agree i want potionomics back as well youre not alone

Caleb B

Yeah. This really seemed like a stark departure from your normal content. Glad you made the decision to prioritize your own enjoyment.

Sub_Woofer

It was short, but thanks for playing Terraria. Personally, I'm glad you will prioritize your own enjoyment over community expectations. While I do realize that this comment acts only as a repeat of what many have already said, I think it's still important to show support for this decision. Bottom line is, all of us are here because we enjoy seeing you doing what you enjoy doing :) Cheers!

Cheo

Lol Terraria just got dunked on

Seth Whitaker

I think Tyler should put some of the games he wants to play in the vote list as well, just in case.

Alex Warburton

I've never been a fan of Terraria for the same reason. Any game that I need to pull things from the Wiki are usually not worth my time (save Enter the Gungeon). Honestly, I miss potionomics but idk if the other AliensRockers agree.

Zachary Falvo

I have always felt that Terraria is not a fun game without meta knowledge from a wiki or something. If you need meta knowledge to make a game good, it's just not a good game.

John Holmes

Terraria is one of my favorite games of all time but i didn't vote for it, i figured it wouldn't be your type of game. Hope the next series is better

Dxlls

I'm glad you bailed. I'm a huge fan of terraria (and voted for it myself), but I wouldn't want you to play a game you don't enjoy. I was interested in seeing a different genre on the chanel, but I wouldn't want it to be at your expense.

Dan Kolonay

Totally understandable. My only bit of advice, if you ever decide to return to Terraria (in your free time or otherwise), is to switch to a small world. It makes it a lot less grindy.

Olivia Nava

This is a good point, stuff like AlchemistNPC makes the game a lot more fun

Logan

It makes sense in all honesty, while i loved terraria, I could kinda tell that you weren't really enjoying the game all that much, if you do plan to do it again in the future, it is much more fun to have someone in the world that knows the game well enough to teach you how it goes.

Jimmoman

You should be able to veto any game you want lol. The more fun you have, the better for us

Jason Carter

Knew it

Jason Carter

While I’m sad your dropping it as somebody who likes the game, I could tell you weren’t enjoying it and it was definitely less fun to watch than when your enjoying making videos.

Carson White

to be honest i havent watched the past 4 episodes because i just lost interest. i do like the game, and would probably enjoy watching it another time, but it just got boring.

Rebekah Bacon

No

MaidenOfAir

Makes sense. I think most of us would rather watch videos of games that you enjoy, than watch you become bored with a game and play it just because we wanted it. Although this does bring up an interesting point, hopefully this doesn’t keep happening where the games we want you to play are different from the games you enjoy playing. I think overall that might lead to this whole Patreon system feeling like a chore than a fun thing.

Logan

I love paying to support one of my favorite creators. This honestly doubles my respect for him and I really look forward to seeing the dildobike enjoying the next ride on this Patreon page .

Hannes Högström

Honestly, editors killed it. You could tell how frustrated he was dying and wasting so much time getting back. But the editors made the whole thing feel like so much fun

Amythistfire

All good! Glad you said something, no one wants you to feel bored playing a game you don't like😁

Gavin Morton

Indeed, I am not a fan of it either looking forward to next series

_Shaey_

I think it’s too soon for modded Factorio. Base game was only like 2 months ago.

Amythistfire

ngl i kinda expected this from the beginning when it won the vote. Terraria is a great game but it's definitely not his style

Kit

I had a feeling that terraria would not feel great to play, it did not feel like the type of games you have played in the past and tends to be a lot lot slower like I could see you doing Minecraft. especially a Minecraft puzzle map or people saying, hey try to do this challenge in Minecraft but ya, I don't think grindy games is really what you ever wanted

Evan Slat

Reading this just makes me uncomfortable, to anyone that reads this, try not to let yourself get burnt, don’t be afraid to say you don’t like something early and move on.

Bonecrushboy

I mean, the reasons you listed are the reason I play modded to reduce that grind. I can't wait for the next vote!

Hidden_glade

It’s a shame but I get it. The game gets so much better after hard mode. But not your type of game so thanks for giving it what you could.

randy davis

Pretty much what I expected. I am voting 110% for the FrostPunk DLCs. I feel like that would be right up your ally.

ThreeForths

Glad we know what happens when you dont like a game this early. Not surprising given its totally not like one of your usual games. Still enjoyed it while it was here. Hopefully frostpunk dlc or modded factorio next, unless someone comes up with a good idea.

Darcy Ryder

Yeah reasons I’m not nominating dredge or anything like that either

Kimberly Welch

Yeah, I kinda felt that you were losing interest in it from the last video, but hopefully this is a good opportunity to get a game you will like

David Lewis

I totally understand and honestly, I figured this was how this would end up - I don't mean that in any way other than I just didn't think you'd enjoy it. The game takes a long-ass time to get to The Moon Lord to beat the game and it only really gets fun in Hardmode, which you were a ways away from.

Christian Gomez

everyone who didn't vote for it and wanted him to be happy with the game they chose

ThePizzaGod69

Unfortunate to end a series prematurely, but I'm still excited to see what the next one is gonna be! 😁

Loneranger152

Understandable, but I gotta give props to you and the editors making the videos so enjoyable despite your lack of enjoyment

Luis Pastor

Yeah I didn’t expect it to be your kind of game. Hopefully the next one is more enjoyable 🙏

AustinR

So it sounds like you need to git gud scrub?
