yeah probably unpopular opinion but i’m glad it was open ended as to their relationship. i like the mc and his redemption but i dislike the trope of having the childhood bully and victim get together. something about it doesn’t sit right. also, at least from my perspective, the mc didn’t seem to have those type of feelings for shoko the way shoko had for him, at least from what he showed. i think the movie benefited from not pursuing a romance angle but that’s just my opinion

2025-08-06 16:15:25 +0000 UTCThere is actually a Manga for this and while its not openly mentioned or shown its heavily implied that they do end up together in the End, so its a nice Happy Ending for this ^^ This is from the Manga: The culmination of Shokos growth is shown in her choice to move to Tokyo after graduating to study to be a beautician, finally looking forward to her own dream of becoming a hairdresser, which was partly inspired by her childhood encounter with Miyako Ishida (Shōya's mother) at her salon while Shōya says he plans to learn how to cut hair instead of going to college and wants to help around his mom’s salon. The manga ends with Shoya and Shoko reuniting with both of them attending a ceremony honoring their graduating class as 20 year olds walking through the door to the coming of age ceremony together holding hands, so its left to the Reader to interpret it as them staying as very close Friends or becoming a Couple. The author Yoshitoki Ooima stated in an interview that there won't be a new chapter or volume showing Shoko and Shoya as a couple, because she didn't want it to be a typical shoujo romance.
