TUTORIAL // solving problems in your art

It's time for the July tutorial ✨ This one is on how you can pinpoint problems in your art and solve them!

It's time for the July tutorial ✨ This one is on how you can pinpoint problems in your art and solve them! This is easier said than done - a lot of people spiral into negative thinking once they notice mistakes in their art. That's why this video is all about how you can maintain a proactive and constructive mindset while solving issues! Not only that, but I also run you through a list of solutions that have never failed me when hitting a wall with my art. I hope you enjoy it! 💖

For the demos in this tutorial, I mainly use the hard round brush from my own brush set.

Here are some additional tutorials I've made in the past that would be a great supplement to this one:

Here's a cheat sheet with the most important information from the video - you can also find a PDF version with clickable links attached to this post!

I hope you enjoy this video ! Feel free to share any future tutorial suggestions in the #tutorial-suggestions channel in the discord server (If you don't know how to join, just follow the steps outlined here) or leave them in a comment below ❤

Loish

love this! thanks for making this, it's like having a remote mentor!

I'm so glad you like it!! it means a lot to me to get such a generous compliment. thanks so much!

Loish

This is incredibly helpful, thank you so much 😭💛 I've been a subscriber since mid 2010's, but I had no idea you were so great at teaching. The structure is very clear and easy to understand, solutions suggested are actual things that work. So much love and care put into every lesson. TLDR I'm obsessed, gonna move to a higher subscription level to watch the rest of these gems, the value for the cost is crazy

thanks so much Sean! really appreciate these words.

Loish

What I appreciate about this video is taking ‘feelings’ and funneling that into an organized actionable manner that can apply to artistic projects. I can see these mindsets to apply to many other mediums. I feel like this is a rare, but essential tutorial. You really establish good mindset.

Sean Petitt

so sorry about that! looks like the attachment didn't upload. I just updated the post, will you let me know if it works now?

Loish

hey, I am not sure if I am just being blind, but I can't find the link to the PDF of the cheat sheet at the end. Can anyone help me out here?

Oona Leganovic

thanks so much Faimano, I'm so glad you enjoy them!

Loish

Hi everyone! Lois, I always love the new tutorial you worked on for us each month. It always gives me the momentum to draw. And this one add solutions for me to not stop in the middle of a drawing. Thanks again 🩵

Faimano

i'm glad that's the takeaway! that's absolutely the case: just know that frustrating moments you run into are part of the growth process and will bring you closer to an intuitive and enjoyable workflow :)

Loish

wonderful tutorial, thank you! I'm definitely at the beginner stage where frustration is very high due to not having an established workflow or style. But what I'm taking away from this tutorial is a more positive mindset about how I can be a more active participant in the process and approach problems with more curiosity & playfulness.

France

I feel the same! I love the way Lois organize all the thoughts and feelings that we went through when creating. It's so easy to follow and it becomes something that is easy to manage. Thank you once again for all your work 💖

I really love these mindset "tutorials". It helps me so much to listen to you talk about not only drawing techniques but your approach to art and drawing as a whole. I've read the newsletter where you wrote about this, treating it as a game and trying to reach the next level, and it helped me so much. It really took the pressure off.

I’m looking forward to receiving three of your signed prints! I purchased them yesterday, Thank you! They will be displayed in my studio——(inspiration). 😍. I may get all six of them….

Michael H

haha, glad i'm not the only one! it is SO hard to keep the energy of the sketch going in the final! achieving that is a lifelong goal of mine.

Loish

Your ‘worse than the sketch’ ❗️❗️❗️ lol IS a big one for me. I draw sketch (usually) very quickly…. The spontaneity in the marks/lines has a much better FEEL than some of my painted versions. Ie: going from graphite pencils to oil studies…… just not the same. I think sketches are (often) more….. valuable (meaningful?) than work based on these sketches where we intend to take the sketch further….. but lol….. LOOSE the initial energy! So…I’d like to paint like I sketch!! ( …. sounds easy enough doesn’t it❗️😵‍💫🫣?)

Michael H

Yes, great video…you cover a lot of the main ‘issues’!

Michael H

i admire your ability to be up that early. every time i do get up early, i love that early morning feeling! but i really struggle to do it, haha. i hope you enjoy the video!

Loish

☕️ Just now heading out to watch this one. It’s been very hot here this last week in Northern Colorado. I’m happy my local Starbuck’s opens about 4:00am! Much cooler in the early morning. And very little traffic. (I’m looking forward to purchasing some of your signed prints).

Michael H

sounds relatable! sometimes there's environmental factors you can tweak to get into a better place with your art and workflow.

Loish

thanks so much!

Loish

Pretty nice and helpful video.

This was so helpful for me! I’m going through an art block, but I was able to realize it wasn’t about MY art, but others around me respecting MY TIME to work. Something crazy, but this put me down and in the “oh, my art is not that important anyway”. Mind trick us in so many strange ways
