TUTORIAL // different rendering styles

It's time for another tutorial ✨ This month, I'll be talking about using different rendering styles! This video is all about choosing which rendering style is right for your drawing. This can depend on a bunch of different things: how much time you have, what your skill level is, or what aspect of your drawing you want to focus on. I talk about what to take into consideration, and I demonstrate 4 different rendering styles that you can try out!

The main brushes I use in this video are:

Here's the artwork I made in the demo:

Here are some additional tutorials I've made in the past that would be a great supplement to this one:

Here's a cheat sheet with the most important information from the video - you can also find a PDF version with clickable links attached to this post!

I hope you enjoy this video ! Feel free to share any future tutorial suggestions in the #tutorial-suggestions channel in the discord server (If you don't know how to join, just follow the steps outlined here) or leave them in a comment below ❤

I just joined to your Patreon, I'm so excited! I can't wait to learn a lot with you and with all your work.

Great to see the differences in your rendering-style work flows!

Just started looking at this tutorial. 💙 Very interesting👍🏻 (Thank you)!

Michael H

yay! hope you enjoy it ✨

Loish

This is exactly what i needed to watch after I've grown a little bit tired and frustated with my art, thaaaank you <3

hey chantal! thanks so much for your kind words! for the language, unfortunately it can only be set to english for now but i can provide you with the subtitle file so you can run it through a translator if you like. if that's an option for you, just send me a DM here on Patreon and I can get it to you! As for your other question, my more detailed paintings are basically the same workflow as my 'painting' rendering style but just more time spent on finalizing and cleaning it up. the sketch eventually disappears under the paintwork (although sometimes it still shows through in some areas). let me know if that answers your question!

Loish

Thanks for this great tutorial 🩷 I wanted to know if it is possible to put the subtitles of the video in languages other than English? I never tire of watching you draw, your lines are so expressive. In the different renderings the initial sketch remains the basis of the drawing and the final rendering cannot do without the initial sketch, for the work of "painting" (the young woman in space), does the sketch disappear completely?

Chantal

So happy to haer you find it helpful as a beginner! I hope these options cover a wide enough range to get you inspired :)

Loish

I hope you enjoyed it Laura!

Loish

happy to hear that Kat! You can definitely get a finished look just from cleaning up your sketch. Painterly is fun but time consuming sometimes!

Loish

thanks so much! I used brushes by Yuming Li, but I've heard that these aren't included in the set that I purchased anymore - still a really great set to get though: https://yumingli.gumroad.com/l/jasdn?layout=profile

just follow the steps outlined here! https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/212052266-Getting-Discord-access

This is really helpful because It’s easy to get lost and lose consistency in your art when you don’t know what to do at each stage, but this tutorial made it much clearer! Also, what brush do you use for the smudge/blending tool?

vmdrawz

How do I get into the discord?

Sam

These are super helpful tips as always! I think I've always felt that I needed to use the painterly technique to make things look finished, but these others look just as finished to me. I'll be trying them out for my next concepts for sure.

Kat Craig

I second that! Thank you so much for creating this tutorial Loish! I love how you take the time to break the topic down into its more theoretical elements because this allows the artist to really get a deeper understanding of things. Your tutorials aren't just about demoing something, they're also about giving us the tools and skills to understand the topic itself. When I suggested a video on rendering styles, I hadn't given much thought to what a rendering style actually entailed but your video opened a world of possibilities for me :D

France

I feel I'm always repeating myself, but I genuinely think your tutorials are the most inspirational things that I have in my daily routines. Your interpretations and the way you work considering the theme requested are always on point and have the magic to make me draw and paint things always in a fun mode and feeling I'm always learning- and that is such a good feeling. Thank you for that Lois <3

Can’t wait to watch this!

Shauna Jared

as a newbie who gets overwhelmed and doesn't know where to start, this is amazing helpful! can't wait to try each one out. love this tutorial. <3

Aquerontesque

Haven't watch yet but I'm sure i'll love it ! Usually only one type of rendering gets covered in tutorials and I'm so happy you're showing us there are options T-T <3
