What I created this month // March 2025

This was SUCH a busy month for me! I moved to a new studio and by the time I was settled in, I had to prep for Playgrounds, where I gave a talk and met so many new artists. Combined with the beautiful fresh leaves of spring, I feel like the world has changed completely since last month! Here's an overview of everything I created in March✨

This month's tutorial was on drawing the planes of the face! This was a much-requested topic and is all about capturing the 3-dimensionality of the head in a stylized and simple way. It's ideal for more painterly styles as well! Watch the full video here.

Since it's my latest tutorial, it will be available on the $5 spark tier for another month! After that, it goes to the backlog, along with 50 other tutorials. Join the spark tier if you want to grab it for $5! And if you want to access the massive backlog of over 50 tutorials, just upgrade to the $10 flame tier 🔥

This month's challenge was on painting dense foliage! I can't resist doing something plant-themed during this time of year, but I also think this is a great exercise for practicing complexity and texture. Here's what I created:

For next month's challenge, we'll be studying colorful lighting together - great practice for painting both lighting and colors! If you're not yet a flame member, be sure to upgrade your tier to access the challenge - all information will be posted on the 1st!

As always, flame members also got access to the process video and a resource video with tips and advice. This is a 20 minute long video in which I discuss my process, common mistakes, and run through the artwork that you guys posted in the discord! If you want to draw studies like this in the future, you might find it helpful. Watch it here!

I feel like this month was all about volumes. Making the tutorial about face planes had me thinking about capturing depth and 3-dimensionality in a stylized way! I created some head studies that were all about stylizing the planes, and I also created some ideas for a figurine - something I hope to create at some point in the future.

I also got started on some cat-themed art, but didn't get much further than my initial sketches because I was so swamped with other stuff. I have two ideas: one just featuring cats on their own, and another with a character. I'll be developing this one a bit further next month! Which one do you prefer?

This month, I shared the full process of my Breeze painting from 2022! It's been a while since I made it, and I was shocked to find that I never put together the process for it even though it's one of my personal favorites. Check out Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 for more information about the techniques I used at each stage!

This month's session was all about perfectionism! We talked about how it can have a paralyzing effect on our creativity, how to distract from it when we draw, and how it made me too scared to drive for 13 years 😱 Based on the responses in the chat, I am not the only one! Watch the full session here.

Thanks for your support this month! I hope you're enjoying spring as much as I am 🌱
