haha happy to hear that. I try not to go on too many angry rants during my Q&As but sometimes I can't help myself 😂

Loish

I feel like I've accumulated so many by now that it's helpful to reference them from time to time so that anyone who is interested in that topic knows the resources are there :) it becomes quite a huge pile over time!

Loish

so happy to see you back, Michael! hope you enjoyed your coffee :)

Loish

Have to add…… I agree with you. (….. about Elon).

Michael H

Ok! Those pixelated Disney characters!1🤨🫵🏻. 🫣

Michael H

Your sketches are often VERY abbreviated/just the simplest indication of your idea/theme. Nice to see those along with your finished pieces.🤔

Michael H

Thanks for suggesting we watch your previous tutorials as they relate to topics we’d find helpful. You have quite a few I want to watch.👍🏻

Michael H

Yes, ‘time crunch’! And getting rest. Yes, down time….big one. Lots of reading for me. I also like just going for drives ( add Spotify/music!). Peaceful for me and I go on my drives when there isn’t much traffic.

Finally made it back! I’m doing some p/t work, and I have a few days off now. Sitting in my local Starbuck’s with coffee==REALLY looking forward to watching your Q&A this early Northern Colorado morning! (…..a favorite time for me) I always learn so much from your videos Loish ❗️💙👍🏻

I'm so happy to hear that Claudia! thanks so much for submitting your question :)

I haven't been able to watch the replay until now. Thanks a lot for answering my question Loish! (the one about drawing from imagination). I think for me a lot of it is the stigma that all my drawings should be a certain level. I actually doodled certain people/portraits while rewatching this, and when I release the pressure there's occasional pleasant surprises :)

Claudia

thanks so much for sharing your perspective! I'll be sure to share it in the next session so other people can hear your thoughts too - it's so helpful to the community!

Loish

i hope you enjoyed the session :)

Loish

ohhh i will check it out!

Loish

this is a great idea! a sketchbook habit is a nice low-commitment way of staying creative. thanks for sharing this!

Loish

thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoy them :)

Loish

this is so helpful, thanks so much for taking the time to share!! I'll be sure to bring this up in next month's Q&A so everyone can hear this in the next session too.

Hi! In the Q&A you mentioned wanting advice about doing art after work. For most of my life, I worked at places that weren't ideal and were far from home - I had almost an hour and a half commute each way. It was draining and hard, but I kept doing art. My advice would be to ask yourself: Why do you want to do art after work? What purpose are you trying to achieve? The approach is very different depending on your answer. If you're doing it for fun, that's one thing, but if you're doing it to improve or change your job, that's something completely different. Understanding your motives will help you plan ahead. Maybe, as you suggested, you can do specific exercises to get closer to where you want to be? Or if you just want to have fun, try experimenting with different tools to spark creativity and see what you can do with them. Also, one important thing is to give yourself time to create and to get bored - don't always fill the space with background noise like podcasts or tutorials. P.S. Side note - I'm doing "The Artist's Way" right now, which is a book that helps reconnect with your inner creator. If you're feeling stuck, maybe it's worth checking this out or some other materials on the topic. Good luck!

First time watching one of your QAs! It was so good, thanks for all your insights! I'll add my own two cents for balancing art with a full time job - I keep a sketchbook with me as often as possible. If I find a few minutes of downtime at work I'll break it out and do some figure drawing or just doodle shapes. A lot of times this will give me some good inspiration for something to keep working on once I'm back home. Or I'll just have gained a nice few minutes of relaxing doodles for the day.

Thank you for uploading, I missed it! Talking about art portfolios and what to include and what not is the PERFECT topic right now for me.

Great Q&A! I'll throw in my two cents for balancing full time work and art: It helped me to take into perspective that many artists struggle with a similar balance, but it's with their own creative work against their paid work. So not even full time artists are free from this struggle! I've found balance by making the personal art making more playful. I get paid to perform and deliver at the day job. But, in art making, it's meant to be light and fun. So doing everything you can to keep it scoped down will make it so that the art making is actually restful. I personally still like to take on projects that challenge my technique, but it's never too far of a stretch from my current ability.
