TUTORIAL // line weight

A new month is upon us, and it’s time for a new tutorial! This one is on line weight. It talks about why it’s helpful to vary the thickness of your lines, and how you can achieve different types of stylistic effects with different approaches to your linework. If you like creating neat and clean lines, it has lots of helpful tips - but it’s also for those of you who like to just work from rough sketches and keep your lines messy, like me!

I mention a lot of tutorials that form good companion tutorials with this one. The main ones are:

For the brushes, I just used the hard round brush from my own free brushset: https://loish.net/free-goodie-bag-for-digital-artists

I also mention that creating strong lineart goes hand in hand with improving your sense of construction and volume. I have a lot of tutorials that touch on these topics! Here are a few of them:

Here's the final result of the demo:

And as always, here's a cheat sheet with essential information from the tutorial:

There's also a PDF version with clickable links at the bottom of this post. Hope you enjoy this tutorial! You should be able to turn captions on and off using the embedded player ❤ Let me know if you have any issues with it! And as always, feel free to ask any questions you may have after watching this video!

i'm so happy to hear that! I also find it soooo boring to create clean linework and it always felt so flat. so hopefully this one will help you, coming from the same perspective!

I've struggled for a long time with linework. It's been particularly hard not to lose the initial depth and flowiness of my drawings. At some point, I gave up completely on the idea of cleaning up my sketches and started the painting process over them, but it never quite felt like I could reach the initial idea I had in mind. So thank you so much for this video. It's been INCREDIBLY helpful. I can't wait to try out all these tips. <3

happy to hear that! sometimes the only way to improve at something is to just accept that you're not willing/able to do it the way you expected.

This was so awesome to watch. I have very similar frustrations about lineart and I've struggled around 15 or more years with it. This approach feels so much more natural and helps me love drawing again.

This was super informative. I never really thought about this, and it was the first time I heard someone talk about tangents. You are an amazing teacher. 👏

This was so wonderfully helpful! I’m coming back to drawing after a bit of time away and all your videos have been SUCH a great sort of refresher course that’s helping me love my art again.

Thank you so much. I really loved one of my line work before coloring in and now I feel it looks flat. Your video came up right on time.

I'd love an in-depth tutorial about compositon! Unless I'm forgetting about one that was already done?
