Some leaf studies! Here’s the reference image, which was a picture taken in my neighbor’s yard:
Ever since I finished last month’s growth painting, I’ve been thinking about how I can stylize plants and leaves in a way that feels realistic but magical and stylized at the same time. I tend to get stuck on capturing tiny, sharp little details which doesn’t give me the look that I want, and I found that using a larger brush for the growth painting was really helpful. So I wanted to revisit some similar subject matter and try this approach again!
Even though the details on ivy leaves are so intricate and detailed, I had to force myself to stay zoomed out and use a larger brush so that the details stayed large and readable. I also exaggerated the colors so that it didn’t look too much like a copy of ther reference image. I’m happy with how it turned out! The process video is coming up in a few days ~ keep an eye out for that!
