EARLY ACCESS // hibiscus

I decided to do another remake! It’s been such a long time since I made the original painting back in 2009:

I wanted to revisit it with this quick speedpainting to see how I would approach the colors and anatomy differently. My approach to drawing figures has changed a lot because I am much less afraid to stylize, and as a result the proportions are way more exaggerated. I also have a much different approach to color - I try to bring in more vibrant secondary tones, especially with more character-based works like these where I think the color brings a lot of the energy and vibrance. But the main thing I’m happy about is that it’s much easier for me to draw 3-dimensional elements like the hibiscus flowers!

My style has changed so much that I don’t think one of these is better than the other - they’re each different and have their own separate types of appeal. I still think the hair looks a lot better in the original. But exercises like these are always a confidence booster because it helps me realize how much more intuitively I work now, just as a result of many years of practice.

Hope you like it! The process video is coming up later this week!

thanks so much!

I love how you made the colors pop so much, the first one is very eerie, and has very dull colors (but the pop of red from the hibiscus’s still makes it intriguing to look at)…While the second is very flowy, calming (but still playful), pleasant, but still exciting to look at. In all, they both look AMAZING!

always so inspiring and fun to see when you incorporate a really vibrant color that i probably wouldn’t have ever dreamed could work so well with the rest of your subject matter! I also happened to watch the lightning tutorial for the first time right after seeing this post and it was a great little pairing for a loish lesson of the day! 💜
