It's time for yet another tutorial! This one is on painting different surfaces. It's about how I approach painting a very shiny surface vs. a softer one, and outlines a general workflow that can apply to any different kind of surface texture!
I use a lot of different brushes in this one. Here is an overview:
The oil pastel and hard round brush I used come from my own free brushset.
Most of the textured brushes from this tutorial come from this set, which was formerly known as Viorie's brushset and is now Cateille's brushset.
A few of the textured brushes I used come from Wes Gardner’s sets (both 2020 and 2019).
I also use a speckled brush from DaveMH's brushset.
I mentioned a few different artists in the intro. Here are the links to their work:
Here are some additional tutorials which might be helpful:
Rendering water with minimal tools: This tutorial demonstrates how to paint a complex texture using very simple and widely available tools.
Soft & hard edges with the lasso tool: This tutorial runs you through a technique that I used in this video: selecting areas and combining that with a grainy, noisy brush.
As always, here's a cheat sheet with the most essential information about this tutorial. There's also a PDF version with clickable links at the bottom of this post.

Here's the final result of the three demos:
And here are the reference images in case you want to draw along!
I hope you find this tutorial helpful! The subtitled version is coming up in just a minute! ❤
