Time for some process videos! Today I’ll be posting two: one for my statue studies, and one for the painting that I made right after that - "blobs"! I feel like they are very connected in terms of their process and subject matter so I wanted to post them alongside one another! This is the first of the two (the statue studies).
Some things to keep in mind while watching this video:
SOFT SKETCH LINES
When I was sketching these out, I found that keeping my initial lines soft and swoopy worked best. My very first lines are a bit sharper but I then switch to a bigger size brush size and set it to a lower flow to get a more gentle, faded kind of line. For me, this type of brush works so much better to capture volume! Because the edges are a bit softer, it makes me think more in terms of the underlying planes and shapes rather than the sharper detail. In general, I found that blocking in softer shapes and shadows to start was really helpful to capture the feeling of these statues and volumes they are made of.
SEARCHING FOR THE RENDERING STYLE
In this video, I try some different rendering styles that just don’t feel right. This happens a lot in my drawing process! I just need to find that style of detailing that ‘clicks’ for the specific effect I’m trying to capture. For this process, that doesn’t really happen until 22 minutes into the video. I decide to just use my hard round brush set to a low flow so that the lines aren’t too sharp or textured. I really liked how I could really gradually build detail on top of my rough sketch in this way, so that the details very slowly come into focus. I hadn’t used this brush to render in a while, so this moment was a big “a ha” moment in my brain! It felt so good that I ended up using the same approach to finalize and render my “blobs” painting.
That process video is coming up in a moment, so keep an eye out for it!
