EARLY ACCESS // statue studies

I went to the fine art museum in Antwerp last weekend with some friends, and was really struck by the beauty of the marble statues. There’s something about the way they have such a defined and sharp silhouette, but also soft and gentle features. So I decided to to some studies based on the statues they have there - these were drawn at home from photo reference. There’s something so freeing about drawing a face purely based on the volumes and not on the colors!

Also, my arm is doing so much better and I'm back to using the hard round brush. It previously triggered some arm pain because of its pressure sensitivity, but now I'm able to use it again without too many issues. I'm overjoyed!

Same, I always want to touch marble statues too. It just looks so soft!

It really was! It just has such a huge impact on my feeling of freedom when drawing. It’s very restrictive!

I haven’t but that sounds amazing! Thanks for the recommendation. I can also recommend something: the broken earth trilogy. There’s these special kinds of people in it that are made of stone. It’s fascinating!

Have you ever read the book Piranesi by Susanna Clark? It is a wonderful story set in an incredible world; a world in a house, filled with fantastical statues, and an ocean. I feel like these statue images could be part of that world :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piranesi_(novel)

These are so beautiful! I can really see the smoothness of the marble here <3 So glad your arm is doing so well! That must have been so frustrating!

You make things look simple when they are not! The softness of the marble is beautifully depicted. Somehow I always want to touch white Carrara marble! And I have the same feeling over here. So congratulations! They are really beautiful. 👌

Thank you! I struggled with arm issues for 6 years before, I’m really happy that I learned enough back then to get better within a half year this time around 😅
