PROCESS VIDEO // mushrooms - screen capture

I put together a process video for my mushrooms painting! Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to film the full process from beginning to end, but this is a large chunk of it - from prepping the initial scanned sketch to doing the majority of the paint work. The reason why I wanted to share this process it’s because I’m using a new technique where I combine the lasso tool with a grainy soft airbrush. It allows me to build up color and texture in a gradual way and I feel like the end result looks a lot like traditional painting, which is why I like it!

This is a screen recording of the process, but I also filmed a large portion of it with my phone. I’ll be uploading that version in a minute!

Some resources that could help explain this process:

Some things to keep in mind while watching this video:

I hope you enjoy this process video! And keep an eye out for the phone version that’s coming up in a minute!

hey grant! definitely using textured brushes is a great start. adding some textures by copy/pasting them on and setting the layer mode to 'soft light' can also do a lot for a traditional look! this might be an interesting tutorial topic actually!

Hey loish! I love this piece so much! One thing that stood out to me was the grainy texture of the selections. They made me feel like it was a traditional piece. I know you can achieve this with a soft brush or a speckled brush but do you have any other suggestions of how to make digital work look more like traditional on canvas? Thanks so much for these beautiful pieces hope to see more in the future!

Thank you!

Such a beautiful painting! It's fascinating to watch you slowly build up all the little chunks of shape and color into such a stunning result.
