Hey patrons! Here’s the full process video for my ginkgo drawing from last week. I use a few techniques in it that I’ve been using a lot lately, so I figured this one was a good one to share.
Some info about this process:
Below you’ll find some additional information about how I created this one!
USING A BRIGHT COLOR AS A BASE
I really like the effect where a bright and vibrant color feels like it’s glowing in the painting. it makes the whole painting feel more luminous and intense. By starting with a bright orange hue and later layering on more neutral colors, I try to create an effect where the yellow feels like it’s glowing "through" the painting. I do this around the 4:27 mark. When using this technique, it’s extra important to make sure that you balance out that bright base color with a color that doesn’t compete with it or weigh it down, which is why I chose more neutral grayish tones for that.
RECONSTRUCTING CONTRAST & LINEWORK
Sometimes, while I’m painting, I don’t like the direction the painting is going in. The contrast becomes too intense, or I start having some frustrations with the construction. At moments like that, it could really help for me to reduce the contrast and start reconstructing the light work on top of that. It allows me to shift my focus towards the edges and lines, and from there I can slowly start to build back and more contrast and vibrance. It’s basically a way of resetting the drawing process. In this process video, I do that around 20:12 minutes in. You can see me create a new layer on top of all the other ones that fades the colors to a more grayish tone. From there, I start reconstructing the lines and working out the issues with the construction and the shapes. I feel like lowering contrast always allows me to get more of a clear overview of where my drawing is heading.
I hope you enjoy, and feel free to ask if you have any questions!
