PROCESS VIDEO // popcorn - part 3

This is part 3 of the popcorn process video! Some info about this process video:

The video has been sped up to 250%, so 2.5 times faster than the real-time speed.
The full process of adding color took me about 7 and a half hours in total.
The brush I use the most here is the Gritty Butter brush from Wes Gardner’s 2020 brush pack.

This part was honestly the hardest part of the process because I really couldn’t figure out how to clean it up without losing the charm of the rough version. I also felt like very additional layer of detail I was putting onto this painting was bogging it down. I fell into a spiral of self-doubt! This is the part of the process that you can see in this tiktok video, where I basically decide that I liked the old version better. About 14:50 minutes in, I take the more polished version, put a mask on it, and get rid of it on some areas and keep it in others - just so I can preserve the work where I felt it was helping the image, and get rid of the stuff that wasn’t working out.

After that I proceed with a little more restraint. I try to just get rid of the messy parts without changing the image too much. I also flip the image about 42 minutes in, so that I can spot the areas that I’ve been neglecting. That’s my main reason for flipping an image: I find that I tend to focus my energy on painting the same areas, and when I flip it, I can spot areas that need some more work.

I still have mixed feelings about the end result but at some point I need to stop thinking about how much ‘better’ something looked before and just finish the painting! I hope you enjoyed these videos despite my indecisiveness :)
