EARLY ACCESS // intuitive sketches

Lately I've been doodling in my sketchbook without any reference, just drawing comfort zone stuff intuitively without thinking too much. I usually have some form of reference in my field of vision (whether it's something I'm drawing directly from, or just some inspiration to guide the process), but for these I just drew without any outside input. They actually started as doodles that I was making during a phone call. I'm really enjoying this more intuitive sketching process right now! It just takes the pressure off and allows me to fully focus on the sketches. Do you ever draw like this? Or do you find reference is more helpful for your process?

yess i think this encapsulates the struggle! breaking free from reference can be nice sometimes but then it can stagnate growth too so it's good to go back once it's needed.

Beautiful sketches! I tend to bounce back and forth between drawing with and without ref. After I used some reference for a while, I want to sometimes "proof" to my self I can do it without. And often it's way more flowy and fun without the ref. But after a while I have to go back to referencing since my drawings (especially portraits) become worse again, or very samey 😅

I love when you draw bigger figures 🥰

i think if that's something you want to do, you can learn it! personally i enjoy wonky anatomy in other people's art to some extent, but it works best when it's a consciously made creative choice.

Loish

that's a good one too! basically like using the reference as a 'jumping off point' rather than a rule to follow through from beginning to end.

Loish

yes, i get that! maybe it's something you can improve on over time?

Loish

that makes sense. it's one of the first things i learned to draw so i've managed to cultivate the ability to draw them from memory, although sometimes i really struggle with coming up with poses off the top of my head.

Loish

thank you so much for your kind words and support jonathan! that means so much to me, truly, i hope you enjoy the content here!

Hi Lois, I just started being a patron this weekend after meeting you at playgrounds. I just wanted to say that you're very inspiring and very wise, and that I'm a patron to support you as a person and artist. If you stopped making tuts or decided to make different kinds of art, that would be fine by me. You have already added so much to my life artistically and in how I see art, and I'm forever grateful to you. I don't know what art you'd dream of making or how you'd ideally change Patreon, but I hope you get everything you dream of.

I love to allow myself to sketch intuitively occasionally even though I'm more comfortable with references. It's such a good way of measuring progress to look at my no-reference work through the years :)

I think my poses long stronger with references, but I feel like people who have studied for a long time retain quite a bit of information. Plus your work has a lot of strong shape language

Samantha Jeffers

Oh wow these are great! I'm scared to draw without reference, but I really should give it a try.

Kat Craig

Whenever I darw without references I find that my sketches are a lot more flat and it's pretty disheartening because drawing without reference is so much more fun than drawing with :(

sandnoy

A mix, sometimes with sometimes without. They look great, very dynamic!

Peanut People on steroids, a unique style that is so cool. Great sketches.

I used to draw without reference, then got to the habit to do it with them which lead me to struggle with my imagination. I started to doodle with just ink, but instead of following the reference entirely I try to combine them 😅 ( it kinda work, and sometimes I get cool pose combinations)

jendy

Im going to try that! Im glad I have your older videos to use as a gentle guidance as I practice. So thank you!

Luna

These are great! usually if I try this, the anatomy will be so wonky that I will feel awful about my drawing. I also feel like it's really hard to come up with pose ideas without references ;-; hopefully I will improve enough someday to do loose sketches like this too!

i have to say, i do need a podcast / tv show / conversation going on when i do things like this, otherwise i also struggle to focus.

Loish

haha yes it scares me too. you're not alone!!

Loish

that's so interesting! i do think it's the same for me, that my intuitive sketches build on my already existing knowledge so it tends to be stuff that i already feel comfortable doing. when i use reference i'm able to break that barrier a bit better. but with reference i sometimes feel too dependent on it. it's always about finding balance i guess!

Loish

I looove drawing intuitively, all my favourite pieces end up being refined intuitive drawings. The problem is that then my ability to consciously create is poor, and when I want to sit down and draw something proactively it's excruciatingly difficult! But if I only draw intuitively then my style doesn't evolve, I keep drawing the same things over and over. Sooooo I'm trying to find a middle ground hehe. I'm finding your tutorials actually help me do that a lot, Lois, because your style is so different to mine I can follow your tutorials and feel really experimental, and then this feeds into my existing style which means my intuitive drawings evolve and..... Am I babbling? Either way these are awesome, I love the shapes of your ladies and hope you're doing well 😬

I do admire you for being able to draw so many loose anatomical sketches out of references! Of course I think it's justice since you've been studying/referencing a lot. It is just fair that you developed some great skills and reflexes :) I also draw loose sometimes, but rarely because I got too comfy with digital drawing and now traditional art scares the death out of me!

Tholia

I absolutely love these sketches. I wish I could keep myself focused enough to sketch more often 😭
