QUESTION // do you struggle with drawing faces?

Hey patrons! I've gotten a lot of questions about how I draw faces from artists who are struggling with getting the proportions and features to work in their drawings. I was thinking of making a tutorial about it that also includes some paint-overs. I figure this would probably do a better job of explaining how I draw faces than me doing a full demo from scratch.

Do you struggle with drawing faces, and are you willing submit your art for me to use in next month's tutorial? If you're ok with that, let me know! You can email me at info@loish.net with your drawing and I will make a selection for the tutorial! Keep in mind that I will be painting over it and changing your art, and that your art will be included in the video for all to see. If that's something you're ok with, I'd love to know!

And if you have specific struggles but don't want to submit your art, post it below - I will try to address it in the tutorial!

My struggles are making the character unique. Coming from a background of anime, it's hard to strike that balance of exaggerating a face shape while still making the person appealing. Also the added challenge of then taking those features and keeping them consistent when the character has to look around and emote to things.

SageOfMagic

either is fine, as long as it is an example of the problems you're running into when drawing faces!

Are more finished/painted pieces preferrable, or are linework and sketches alright?

Ive got more issues with eyes proportions wise and more issues with posing and bodies even with refs. I dont know if i will have any tood examples but ill look around for face ones :0

Divi (Lovewin)

thanks so much yara!

Loish

that does make sense! you sometimes have to scale down the detail to make it work at a smaller size. I'll try to address this in the tutorial!

Loish

it does! I'll be talking about this isuse in the tutorial :)

Loish

I don’t know if this makes sense but I have a hard time making eyes seem human!

Abby Warner

What i seem to have the most struggle with is if I'm drawing a stylized portrait it will come out okay, but if I try to make a full body piece and the face is much smaller and needs less detail then I have a hard time making it look nice if that makes sense.

I feel I struggle with consistency in shape. Like, sometimes my characters look older or younger than I wish they did and I can't always figure out why lol different angles are also a pain, they don't always look right, it feels like a different character sometimes. I also sent some of my art for you to take a look! You can use it as an example if you want to show in a video.

Yara Oliveira

In my case the problem its not the proportions but the inner planes of the head, I dont know how to represent the different directions without making it look older than the person really is

Carmen Redondo

It has become a bit better with time but what I struggle a lot with in regards to faces are symmetry and giving them dimension.

Anska

yes, it can be a lot! hopefully you'll find the tutorial helpful!

Loish

Yes, all the help with faces please. I find it exhausting because there’s so much to learn with the body and I’ve been trying to just focus on head and neck right now so a tutorial on this is perfect timing.

Jessina Jana

Great idea! I’m always struggling with the hairline… 🤷‍♂️

Frederik Gheysen

Wabisabii

I have same problem 😅🙏

Klara Art

I really want to know how draw teeth and more expressions but also have aesthetics pleasing portrait. I feel when I try some difficult angles or expressions my portrait are more ugly and stiff 😅 and I send you some art and some different questions. Thank you for this tutorial 😍

Klara Art

It’s always so hard for me to get the chin right for proportions 😭

Luna

Sometimes drawing the junction of the chin with the neck when looking from down or when you look the head from behind.

100% yes and I love this idea.

BookishPym

This is such a cool idea! I'm looking forward to seeing what's submitted :)

Kat Craig

I've noticed that my girl's facial features tend to be flat or stiff. I'm going to email an example of what I mean

Melody

I kinda struggled drawing faces with different faces. also when coloring with different lighting scenarios.

Phoenix

Yep, I struggle when I have to draw them from my head without a reference. Then it looks horrible, I always need a reference but it's slowing me down.

Esperanta Dragon

Hi Loish, fantastic idea! 3/4 profiles are hard for me, especially if you look down and up. The nose always brings me difficulty. Thank you so much
