TUTORIAL // overlapping shapes & foreshortening

It’s time for this month’s tutorial! Some of you requested a tutorial on perspective. I am not experienced enough to give tips on two-point perspective or other types that are used for buildings or cityscapes, but I can talk about creating some perspective and depth in character art. I do that by creating overlapping shapes and using some construction tricks to create foreshortening! This tutorial runs you through how I build up shapes to create depth, and how I approach lighting & rendering to push them when I finalize my sketch.

As always, here is a cheat sheet that breaks down the content of this video, and you can find the PDF at the bottom of this post as well:

Here are the reference images I used, in case you want to draw along:

And here are some additional resources:

Hope you enjoy it! Let me know if you have any questions! And if you have ideas for future tutorials, let me know by posting a comment, DM, or dropping it in the #tutorial-suggestions channel in the discord server!

Subtitled version is coming up in a minute :)

This tutorial was very helpful to draw complex poses I always had difficulty with. Also, it helped me to capture the volumes of the subject. Thank you so much!

Shubhangi
