TUTORIAL // elevating your sketch by adding color

Hey patrons! I’m starting this month with the tutorial, and it is on elevating your sketch by adding color! This one was suggested to me in the discord server, and I thought it was a wonderful idea for a tutorial. This tutorial is not just about adding color to a sketch, but about doing so in a way that brings added value to the sketch while still preserving the appealing elements of the sketch itself. I hope it’ll inspire some of you to dig up some old sketches and bring them to life with a splash of color and detail!

Below is the cheat sheet for this tutorial, and you can also download the PDF for it at the bottom of the post:

my latest sketchbook is almost full, so I do think it's time for a new sketchbook tour soon!

the workflow is pretty much the same! Just bring your sketch into procreate, create a multiply layer and just do the same basic steps outlined on the second page of the cheat sheet :)

Finally got around to watching this one, I sought it out specifically to help me with my drawing for the secret santa :) By the way, any chance we might get to see a sketchbook tour soon? The sketches at the start of the video are super inspiring!

How can I do this in procreate?

thanks so much courtney!

thanks so much greg!

You are a remarkable teacher. Your work is compelling, your explanations are outstanding.

for me, merging all of the layers together is a way of just keeping things easy and intuitive. it just takes a lot of time/energy for me to switch between layers, and also makes it harder for me to make changes to the color scheme and details quickly and easily. so merging it all together has solved that for me! but for some workflows, it might be better to keep them separated. for me personally, it's made things a lot easier :)

Loish

I am in awe of your ability to merge layers! Do you do it for a particular reason? I keep all my layers because I’m afraid of not being able to go back or edit specific parts. But it kind of feels like it is working against me and I can’t put my finger on it. Any ideas on this?

AH ok. Thanks for the reminder, I need to re-watch that one :)

Though I don't do it too often, I really like this mixed media approach, this video is going to be really helpful to improve the technique I use, thank you!!

Very cool! I have a bunch of pencil drawings that I think I might try this with! I feel like it would be super relaxing too since the sketch is already there :) Also...I was experiencing a weird mandala effect thinking I saw this one before but I think it was a different one with the same drawing lol. Thank you for this!

Oh wow, love it! I don't draw in my sketchbook as much anymore, but this new technique makes me want to open it again and sketch right away. I will definitely try it out, thank you for this tutorial Loish! :)
