Development Update
Added 2022-02-22 16:05:36 +0000 UTCHey everyone, Prologue here. Two and a half months have passed since Didnapper 2’s release, and what a time it has been. Between all the excitement and all the holidays, many things have been going on, so we’re sorry we didn’t get to communicate as much as we would have liked to. That being said, I’d like to break the silence and go over a few points today!
Release retrospective
First, I want to thank everyone who’s supported development of Didnapper 2 over the years! Wether you were an active patron or just a fan, all your support means a lot to us, and helped Didnapper 2 become the success it is today. Thanks to all your release purchases, we can comfortably continue developing updates for the game, while still being continually supported by our generous patrons over on Patreon.
Despite a bit of a rough start and quickly needing to push a release patch to fix a few dramatic bugs, release went quite smoothly; even though it might have made us grow a few white hairs, it was an incredibly rewarding experience to see fans finally be able to enjoy this project we’ve worked so long on.
If you haven’t picked up the game yet, you can get it on Steam or on Itch.io.
We’re aware that many of you are on a tight budget and have had to resort to piracy. While we do not condone it, we understand your situation, and would only ask you consider buying a copy for yourself when you get the means to do so one day. You can also expect a few sales on the game this year, which we’ll announce when we get there. After all, it’s mainly thanks to all of our players that we’ll be able to continue working on DiD projects in the future.
Upcoming update
We’ve been hearing numerous requests for mod support, which is planned as our first major update to the game.
I’d like to take this opportunity to clarify that the mod manager itself is a community project that we have no hand in. While we will gladly include it in the game once it is done and provide ressources to ease development and distribution, we unfortunately cannot provide an accurate release date for it. It is worth noting however that development has been proceeding at a steady pace, and it shouldn’t take too much longer for it to be finalised.
Our original intent was to include the mod manager with the next version of the game, but due to the current situation, we will be pushing these separately.
On top of all the bug-fixes and balance adjustments, this update will contain a complete overhaul of the Jobs system, transforming them into more rewarding Challenges.
We have also added half a dozen new Game Over scenes for different points in the main story! It is worth noting that these scenes are events that take place on the game map and do not include new CGs.
Finally, we have outfit graphics for Seles’ and Aden’s maid outfits! These will be displayed when the characters equip the relevant armor, and will change the appearance of the map sprites, the battler images and the fullscreen dialogue scenes.
Some of you might notice that this doesn’t include the escape minigame, and are probably already typing up a displeased comment below. The reason for this decision is the cost. Since the escape graphics are complete traditionally animated images, we simply do not have the ressources to justify adding such a feature in. That being said, we estimate it is fairly likely that someone will mod this feature in later down the line. We hope you understand our decision.
You can expect the public release of this update sometime during the next week, so look forward to that! We will be releasing it as a closed beta to our Patreon supports in a couple of days.
Quest update
I’d like to touch a couple of words on this planned update.
First things first, development is coming along steadily, as quests are being written out and assets prepared. To give you all a better idea of the scope of this update, let me share a few numbers with you.
We’re planning around 20 new full side quests that will be spread out throughout the game. In addition to this, we’ll also be adding about a dozen world events that you can discover by exploring the world. Naturally, these will all include copious amounts of DiD content.
Alongside these quests, we’re pleased to announce that we will be adding 12 new outfits/armor sets, for a total of 4 appearances per character. These will mainly be obtained from side content and will have the same properties as the existing maid outfits.
We won’t announce today what these outfits are, but rest assured that they are all planned out already, and have been chosen to offer a good amount of variety. Patrons on our discord server might’ve already seen our artist Tiki working on one of these, so if you’d like a sneak-peak, considering supporting us via Patreon.
Finally, alongside this update, we are also pleased to announce the release of our first OST album. Since it will contain content from these new side quests as well, it will be released simultaneously with the quest update. Our composer Weaselxr is currently hard at work preparing the game’s tracks for distribution. You can expect more information on this as we near release. We are planning to release it digitally on Apple Music, Spotify, Bandcamp, and Steam.
