UPDATE // new versions of paintings

I actually don’t! But I haven’t finished too much in terms of painting. I just enjoy trying to finish it and move on. But I’m not soooo experienced on digital art

I just became your patron yesterday Loish, and I must say, its just the best! I have been following you on social for a while now. One of my problems is I sometimes absolutely hate what I painted or drew months or years before. But I usually don’t have time to change or update so I just consider it finish and as a sign of progress.

To be fair, I also have a day job so I'm not able to put as much time into it as I want to lol. But yeah I'm hoping to FINALLY finish it for this winter.

i agree, it's important to choose the method that allows you to feel more free to share your work with the world. i guess the specific method to do that depends on you personally and what your way of working is!

ah yes that's such a typical thing for posting work online! I think that's why I sometimes rework my paintings when prepping them for social media. I see them at a way smaller size and get a different sense of the painting than before.

that's so interesting! if there's too much time in between new painting sessions, I end up reworking the entire thing over and over again and it morphs into something totally new eventually.

that makes sense! I also try to just consider it finished once it goes up on social media. i'm not able to update or change the images after that so then it's truly done for me.

Oh yeah... I try not to. I like to come back to old ideas years later and see what I can do better this time though. But with work, I try to keep the mindset, once done, is done. Unless it is a huge flaw I see that I missed earlier.

My cousin takes artistic photos and whenever he looks back at a photo that he just took he looks dissatisfied, turns on his camera, and takes the photo again. And again. And again. I think many artists, after having "slept on" a piece, has second thoughts on their work. Sometimes you just have to say, "Eh, it's good enough."

They're magical! Thank you for sharing it here. Yep, I do it too. I almost always find something to tweak if I haven't looked at my work for a while. It's fun to get that spark of excitement reignited and finally feel like the work is finished.

Oh yeah the new figures look great! And I definitely do the same...there's a holiday painting that I've been working on for three years and the last iteration's figure is pretty different than the first. I like it much better though :)

Wow, I do this all the time too! It gets so bad that I’ll work on a piece for a solid month, classify it as done, then look at a year later and work furiously to change multiple things I either didn’t notice were off when I was working on it, or just simply don’t like now. Because of this I rarely consider my pieces as “done”…they’re all works in progress! I usually classify the versions of the piece I share with others as the “final wip” cos I know I’ll come back and tweak something xD love your work, btw!! Been a big fan since 2009!!

I get it totally…so often I’ll post something straight after finishing & then view it a few days later on social media & realise there’s things I don’t like… need to learn to put them away & come bam lol with fresh eyes…. Although sometimes I pick something up because of the platform it’s on… I work with a Dark UI, but then posting on say Facebook, with a light background, it changed the values completely & will look much darker than I thought, & details that were quite readable become lost.

Hello Loish ! When you change a part of your drawing, do you erase everything and start over following all the steps or do you start over on the same layer ? It’s really beautiful 🥰

I can see what you mean! They all look great but the latest versions definitely work better. I tend to tweak my work a couple of times after I've posted them too, not sure if it's a symptom of perfectionism or a tool to actually prevent me from getting stuck? Now that I think of it, I guess I'd rather have several versions of a painting out in the wild instead of never posting them because they're not perfect yet. I also love seeing other artist's before/afters and hear their thoughts on them, so thank you! :)

it's helped a lot! but i think it's good to maintain a regular drawing schedule and just stick to that. it's not good if you have to rush things just to post something!

how much has patreon helped you work ahead? I’m in the middle of planning my patreon and I really want to offer early accesss but I literally rush out drawings bc I have nothing to post that day lol🥲
