TUTORIAL // drawing different body types
Added 2022-08-09 08:23:24 +0000 UTCIt’s time for this month’s tutorial! This one is about drawing different body types, something that was requested a few times over the last year. It covers:
- How I developed a ‘default body type’ over my artistic development, and how I learned to divert from it to draw different types of characters
- How to modify basic shapes and proportions to create variety in the body types
- How to develop a character sketch from a reference photo
- Where to find valuable reference material for different body types
The brush I used was the MaCaLabs HB pencil brush: http://cbr.sh/fg8up?ref=loish
Here is the artwork that I created during the tutorial:

Some other tutorials that might be useful to check out after this one are:
- Constructing a pose: In this tutorial I talk about the basic shapes I use to construct a character and how I arrange the elements to create a more flowy and dynamic pose.
- Drawing masculine faces: This one talks about ways in which I try to convey masculinity in a face, especially about using angular shapes and straight lines as a shortcut.
Hope you enjoy this tutorial and as always, let me know if you have any questions or ideas for future tutorials - they are always welcome! Subtitled version is going to be posted in a minute.

2022-11-04 10:43:08 +0000 UTCVery grateful, I think what you are doing is higher education, without university. Everything is cool, the only suggestion is cool, if you were able to post a closed link on Youtube, the fact is that in Russia and the CIS, few people know English, and we have Alice at Yandex (she translates all videos into Russian). This would greatly help a large number of people and simplify life. Thanks again! I understand that this is technically not the fastest, but it would be great!

2022-08-11 20:48:41 +0000 UTChey lise! that's a great idea - i do have the topic "hard and soft shading" listed, would that address what you want to learn?

2022-08-10 09:01:05 +0000 UTCso sorry to hear that! unfortunately youtube isn't an option for me because it has very poor privacy controls, and technically you're not allowed to use it for subscription services. you can find the tutorial listed here - https://www.patreon.com/posts/64518198 - be sure to use the correct password listed at the top! let me know if that works!

2022-08-10 01:04:47 +0000 UTC(as a side note, I think when I originally asked about it, I mentioned loving the way you draw fat bodies as someone who is a fat person- I got your newest book in the mail this week and I loved the page in there with similar drawings. thanks for your care and willingness to go outside your default box!)

2022-08-09 15:05:32 +0000 UTCI don’t know why your videos always stop halfway through for me :( I’ve seen other creators somehow upload them through a private YouTube link and they aren’t as glitchy. Maybe something to test out if you haven’t tried that already? Love your work and content !

2022-08-09 11:30:19 +0000 UTCThank you for this cool tutorial. I don't know if you have already done one, but have you considered one about edges for light and shadow, like where to place sharp edges in the face, and body for example? I find that so difficult to wrap my head around.
