EARLY ACCESS // old men studies

Some rough digital studies of some older guys! I wanted to break out of my usual subject matter and try something different. I’ve been wanting to capture wrinkles, folds, and volumes more lately so this felt like a good subject to try it on! I’ve also been trying a new approach to lines lately: instead of building up the basic shapes first, I just start drawing the lines straight ahead. It’s a pretty scary process for me since I’m used to building up the basic elements with very light lines before going in with darker lines, but I really like the result of doing it differently. The sketch can turn out a bit more lopsided than it normally would but I think it adds personality to the sketch. This is something I want to do more in the future because it feels quite freeing. How do you build up your sketch? Do you start setting down lines right away or do you also tend to build up very gradually like I do?

haha yes i guess that's what draws me to it! the feeling that it will give me confidence if i can do it!

Loish

They're GREAT! I am definitely more of a 'build up' person but I'm trying to go straight in because I really think it helps build confidence. It is terrifying hah!

Hey Loish! Thank you for your reply and everything else, I love your work!

Zita Varga

hey zita! it's ok to draw a bit more slowly if that works better for you, but i also understand that you're looking for a more efficient process. I kind of choose my subjects on a whim, just however I'm feeling on that day. Lately I've been choosing my subjects based on how much I can focus on volumes and shapes, so.. wrinkles have been great for that!

gorgeous!!!!

These are amazing!!! I start by drawing light lines and basic shapes, these together help me to see the form. But I do it mainly with digital tools, so when I draw with a pencil on paper I focus much more on the lines. I think I am a bit slow and tend to overthink the process. I want to acquire a faster technique with a lot more freedom. I follow your tutorials which help me a lot. I agree it is okay not to have the perfect lines or shapes but to give it personality. How do you choose your subject and how do you collect your references?

Adore the color palette for this!

thank you! this is my current frustration with my lines when I don't use basic shapes to construct. they feel like starts and stops rather than flowinng lines. gotta build some confidence there!

Loish

There is soul in these.

Hey! I'm a genuine "old guy" so I appreciate your excursion into different territory. I sketch in pencil outlines first. My difficulty is keeping the lines solid and smooth, not a collection of starts and stops. I like your portrayals, they express you style and are sensitive to the individuals.

And after downsizing? What size is it for uploading? :o

Olga Trawińska

I'm drawing in photoshop and my canvas tends to be about a3 size or larger (usually around 7000 pixels, long edge)! I downsize it for instagram, that's important to keep the quality good.

Fantastic!!

I usually start with basic shapes. To me, drawing or painting is like slowly bringing an image into focus. Rough and indistinct at first, where rendering pulls in the sharpness. However, I presume that going straight into more refined linework offers the same benefit as creating from the imagination without reference.

I dont draw lines if I use photoshop, I just block colors and forms I like then I "sculpt" and clean edge with eraser and I add lines a the final stage to defines the drawing.

Tess

Can you tell me on which size of canvas are you drawing in procreate to add it on instagram in best quality? I have this problem all the time…

Olga Trawińska

When I go straight in with lines (no sketching build-up beforehand), my brain has to figure out all the under-lying volumes as I'm mark-making. It's like my brain is doing two things at once, which I find harder - and my drawings sometimes come out stiffer or the volume is off... it's something I'll get better with practice hopefully. I find when I draw my mind is constantly competing between gesture, shapes and volume... and when I go lines first I naturally just follow shapes and forget the other two.

Robyn Coleman

that's interesting! so do you have a mental picture of where everything goes once you set down your first line?

Loish

I draw lines first, I come from comics, in fact I watch your tutorials to try out your approach which I find very interesting to experiment with.
