EARLY ACCESS // random sketches

Here are the results of a random sketch session! I drew some characters and a little self-portrait. I’m never happy with how my self-portraits turn out, since I never feel like they actually look like me! It’s especially difficult when I can’t liquify or paint over it. Gotta keep trying though!

I do! I have a tutorial on inking - https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-flowy-56706948 and one on sketching - https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-light-66773593

I love your work I'm more of a traditional artist, do you have any tutorials for more traditional style?

Nathan Hopkins

thank you!

Loish

That's so interesting, since I feel like I can always recognize when you do a self portrait! Sure, it may not look exactly the same, but something about the likeness is always there!!

wavylinesem

haha it depends entirely on your taste i guess! i have some fancier ones with a nice grip to them, but i don't feel like they have a lot of added value over the cheap ones. but i totally get that there are people who do prefer the fancier tools!

Loish

I almost always use a mirror, because that creates the challenge of recreating my face as I perceive it! I always feel like photos distort reality quite a lot, plus I tend to want my selfies to be flattering, while that isn't my goal for self protraits :)

Loish

That bic is my favorite pencil to draw with! How do you go about doing self portraits? Do you go from a photo of yourself or a mirror or what ?

Marques Martinez

It's a little odd to see you using a cheap mechanical pencil everyone has access to. I expect pro artists to have some high end $200 professional pencil to create their work. A very humble reminder to use what I have and stay off Amazon.

Danny

Yes! Thank you Loish!! 😊

Sofi Saccone

They really did break the mold with those little guys. Damn near indestructible, consistent if finicky performance, and for whatever reason just unsexy enough to ensure no one will be stealing it off your desk. :D

Cluisdotorg

hey sofi! do you mean the thing I used to blend? it's called a blending stump :)

Loish

do you mean traditionally or digitally? when working traditionally I use ecoline brush pens and colored pencils to add color. digitally, it's the same process as the one I explain here - https://www.patreon.com/posts/66779976

Loish

haha you are not alone in that!

Loish

it's a constant struggle! i guess it's hard to see our own features clearly.

Loish

yes! I tweak the levels and do a lot of adjusting to get the contrast right. somehow I feel like the photo never conveys the level of contrast I see in real life.

Loish

haha thanks! i literally have no idea where i got it. i've just always had it somehow.

Loish

Thank you :)

Sofi Saccone

Do you have a different approach to adding color to inked lines as opposed to a sketch or painting?

Lilanoire

Keep on sparkin' it, dear. You are so special.

Rob Callicotte

If you're talking about the white pencil thing, I think it's a Faber Castell smudger tool 🥰

andy_illustrates

My gosh, these just don't look like traditional sketches they are MAGICAL. I've still got to watch your flowy sketches tutorial and can't wait to see how the magic happens haha. Thanks for sharing!

andy_illustrates

Hi Loish! 💙could you please tell me how is called that thick pencil that you used for the sketches? Thanks for sharing your work 🙏

Sofi Saccone

It looks exactly like you!

I really like Funkymonkey1945's distinction between "accuracy" and "likeness". He says that something that is "accurate" may not really "look like" the person as well as something that has really solid "likeness". Like an illustration of you with high "likeness" factor could just be an inverted triangle, with angled bangs and that huge pony tail your always sport. Basically a short hand for the main characteristics we see as you. Personally over the years I identify you by your self portraits, and they feel oddly more accurate than the photos I see of you on IG. :D Like that is the living, animated Loish living in my head preventing me from shitting the bed drawing-wise half the time :D Justa thought, great stuff as always! p.s. Also love the level of absolute abuse apparent on that god-only-knows-how-old Bic mechanical you are using :D

Cluisdotorg

Beautiful work as always! I also love how white the paper is in the picture and the contrast between the sketch lines. Is this something you do when you edit the photo?

AJ Howard Art

I love seeing your sketches so much <3 And I could tell it was you :) I get it though, I've done so few self portraits because I can never seem to get the likeness right. More often then not they turn out to be more cartoony than anything else lol.

Kat Craig

Yes it’s you ✨😌✨ u r amazing

Diego Fernando Román Cuesta

These are wonderful and super inspiring.

Thomas Fluharty

I definitely recognized the self portrait! Love the sketches you've been sharing lately. They all contain that particular energy you get from the early stages of a piece.

Reagan Lehman

I was inspired to do some traditional sketches after I watched your tutorial and I had been drawing in procreate for so long I kept trying to double tap the page to undo all my “bad” lines. Yikes 😅

Romy Sauvageau Robillard

I loved the self-portrait! And it looks just like you, but mostly, it looks like your self-portraits 😆 They all have the same distinct look. Also, I'm amazed at how it feels just like the digital ones

Juan Gagliardo

I saw it was you straight away! Amazing work as always😍
