DEMO // turning scanned lines into a transparent layer
Added 2022-06-01 09:02:01 +0000 UTCHere’s a little demonstration of how I turn scanned linework into a transparent line layer, which is something I did when creating this artwork of Ariel! I wanted to talk you guys through it in a video, because it felt like the most intuitive way to get this information across.
Some additional info:
- Here is a super basic resource on masks for those of you who are not familiar with them: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/how-to/layer-mask.html
- For Procreate users, here’s a helpful mask resource for you: https://procreate.art/handbook/procreate/layers/layers-mask/
- For my little mermaid process video, I first adjusted the scanned lines by painting on the layer with a brush, before turning that layer into a mask. Anything that’s greyscale can be used as a mask, so it essentially doesn’t matter whether you modify the lines first before pasting it into the mask channel.
- It is also possible to paste a greyscale image into your mask in Procreate. To do that, create a layer with a mask. Then select your greyscale layer that you want to turn into a mask, and copy it. Then select your mask and make sure the mask is empty before you paste. Then do a 3 finger swipe down, and press ‘paste’ - your greyscale image should be pasted into the mask. You can then invert it by tapping on the mask and selecting ‘invert’ from the little menu that appears.
I hope you find this helpful! I love using masks, once you get the hang of them they can be a really powerful tool to adjust and modify your art without damaging the layer itself. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

2023-07-17 16:18:53 +0000 UTCHello Loish, I don't know if this just happens to me, but I've tried several times and the video stops at 3:10 and 9:00 even when it's buffering correctly. I avoid this by just skipping a few seconds after those intervals. Nice tut btw!

2022-08-31 09:57:57 +0000 UTCI absolutely would have never figured this out and your tip for Procreate worked perfectly I just had to make sure the three-finger gesture for the copy and paste menu was turned on lol. This is so much easier than anything I was doing before. : D

2022-08-17 05:02:40 +0000 UTCAHHHHH yes of course! I think I got confused because I could see the layer behind it maybe? But yes, that makes sense I see now. Thank you!

2022-08-09 08:48:15 +0000 UTChey andy! I think that's because I already kind of removed the paper texture in the black and white version before copy/pasting it. but please do correct me if I'm wrong, I'm kind of guessing the answer because I'm not sure which exact moment you're referring to!

2022-08-09 08:33:15 +0000 UTCHeya! I just watched this and it's wonderfully helpful. There's just one thing I didn't understand, and can't try it out on my laptop because it keeps crashing 😢 (I need to invest in a new one, really). The question is: when you copy the linework layer onto the "red square mask layer" I don't understand why it only selects the linework, and not the paper texture behind it. Why is this? Is it just the type of selection you used on the linework layer? Thank you so much for creating this and taking the time to read this!

2022-08-08 13:32:24 +0000 UTCThis is so smart!! I love it. One thought I had, do you think all those smudges come from using tissue to rest your hand on while drawing? Instead of using paper. Because tissue is a blending tool, so even the pressure from resting your hand is bound to cause all that smudging. Using paper to rest my hand on (as well as a makeup brush to brush away eraser crumbs) really helps me to prevent any smudging! Just a thought!

2022-06-11 10:09:55 +0000 UTCHello Loish, thank you very much for answering me and for sending me the new link to vimeo. I'm talking to patreon to try to fix it. About the subtitles, could they be seen in Spanish? I would really appreciate this because I don't understand English at all and I have to go around doing transcriptions to translate them later. Thank you very much for your art :)

2022-06-03 01:43:02 +0000 UTCthat's a great idea but unfortunately i am really not skilled at photobashing myself. i've done it a few times in the context of work, but it was a real struggle for me. i'm just used to drawing everything!

2022-06-01 23:05:12 +0000 UTCHello, very informative tutorial as usual, Loish. Just want to point out that in Photoshop we don’t need to go into the Channels palette to paste a mask. We can paste it right into the Layer Mask, provided it’s ‘visible’. For instance at around 7:50 min where Layer 4 is filled with red, if we (option/alt+click) on that white Layer Mask thumbnail, the mask will now become ‘visible’, and we will no longer see red, our screens will see a full sized version of the mask, in this case empty (white). Then we paste our sketch line layer right onto there and edit it if we want. The trick !!! is to remember to press (option/alt) when clicking on the mask thumbnail. If we just click on it and it looks selected, and hit paste, PS will just make a new layer copy of the paste. Also, there is an ‘invert’ button in the properties panel when the mask is selected, but even more handy is the ‘density’ slider, because you can mess with the mask independently of the Layer opacity and fill sliders, —really useful with textures. I realize none of my points might actually save any seconds, but to me this is an easier way to visual what’s going on; also some beginners avoid alpha channels at first because reasons scary. Peace.

2022-06-01 20:58:28 +0000 UTCThis was so great! Thank you so much. I actually asked a similar question in my photoshop class a couple months ago and the answer I got was nowhere near so useful.

2022-06-01 10:22:18 +0000 UTCHiya Lois! I was wondering, if you have any experience at it at all, can you make your next tutorial video (or any one of them any time you want) about photobashing? Especially photobashing in Procreate. That would be wonderful!
