PROCESS VIDEO // forest

I put together the process video for this painting! The whole thing took me a little over 3 hours to do, and I sped it up to twice the original speed. You can slow it down or speed it up in the player bar! I also filmed parts of the process with my phone, which Iโ€™ll post right after this one!

Here's the final result of this process:

During the process for this one, I was searching for the right mood and colors. I liked my initial sketch, but once I started adding colors, I actually really didnโ€™t like how it looked. I just felt like the values were off and the green was looking a bit cheap. I end up fixing it by darkening the tree quite a lot and adding some more vertical brush strokes to it, and around 21 minutes in, I hide background entirely so I can work solely on the tree. I felt like if I could make the tree work, I could adjust the background later. And thatโ€™s what ended up happening - by later applying the same kind of vertical brushstrokes to the background, it all started to feel more unified. I guess the image just needed some texture and consistency which it was lacking before!

After that it was a lot about adding interesting shapes in the rendering process. I was actually thinking about this a lot while painting, because I had already started brainstorming the content for my tutorial on interesting & flowy shapes when I created this. I think this process video is a good companion piece to that tutorial. Be sure to check it out if you havenโ€™t seen it yet!

Hope you enjoy this process video and as always, if you have any questions, ask away!

haha, i didn't intend it that literally but i also saw lots of curvy, organic shapes in the tree while drawing which I really leaned into. I'm glad you liked this process video!

And just when you think the artist has finished, there are more strokes making the picture even better.

Victor Newman

Yes, remarkable and now I have been watching the process video. Hey! Anyone who hasn't watched it, whether artist or not, should do so immediately. Watching the artist build the picture is very fascinating. I am not an artist, but I was afforded a view of one creating a picture of incredible beauty drawn primarily in variations of green and brown. When the picture is reversed and more strokes are added, there was a revelation to me that the magnificent tree is feminine. The hint of breasts that appeared during the creation at first threw me. At my age, >80 and alone, I can be a helpless and hopeless romantic. So please don't scorn too much. But then why not? The tree is protecting the maiden sitting on her arm. Later, there is a hint of the tree's butt. I don't expect many to agree. But please watch the process video again.

Victor Newman

thanks so much victor!

You can even see how the maiden was able to climb to her vantage point. Remarkable effort.

you're welcome! there's indeed no audio - the videos are so extremely long, so i just leave it without audio so people can put their own preferred music on while watching.
