EARLY ACCESS // more buildings in procreate

Back to drawing buildings in Procreate! Still struggling to make them expressive and dynamic. These studies are based on a picture I took in Annecy:

For this one, I tried out a workflow where I created the basic structure and color for the building first, before proceeding with the details. I liked this ‘base version’ a lot, but felt ambivalent as soon as I started detailing it in my usual painterly way. I just felt like this way of working killed the clear sense of form and shape and turned everything blobby.

So after making this ‘painterly’ detailed version, I went back to the base version and started over from there, using a more simple and minimalistic workflow. This version has very few modifications on the base version and has a finer, more line-based approach to layering on the details. It felt a lot better while drawing it, but when I was done I just didn’t feel like there was a really significant enough difference between the two versions. And I actually preferred the painterly one, haha!

I did find the workflow of making an expressive and readable ‘base shape’ first very helpful, so that’s something I’ll be continuing to do when drawing architecture. I also tried using a perspective grid in this one which I really liked, although I started using it halfway through and I feel like the results would be better if I used it for my initial sketch.

So that’s the latest in my quest to improve my architecture drawing skills! Wish me luck in my next sketch session, haha!

These are looking lovely and I think in the painterly one has more depth and soul, somehow. I’m looking forward to seeing the process you uploaded :) I’m glad the grid helped at any phase.

Thank you for considering! I do feel like that sometimes but curating a life offline that is safe and supportive helps a lot. If I started creating art just to fit in or just for likes and numbers I think I would be struggling quite often!

That would be great! I try using it and things just look too fake or too much like a "dollhouse" haha

Maybe once I've got the workflow down a bit I can do a quick demo to show you all :)

for the most part, brushes from this set: http://cbr.sh/ai2y9?ref=loish

that's an interesting topic lauren, I'll consider that for a future Q&A session or something similar! I'm sorry you're feeling that way. There's a lot of gatekeeping that goes on in the art community so you're probably not the only one feeling that way.

I love these! I have a not so related question: would you be open to talk about artists that feel that they don’t really fit into the art community? Sometimes I feel like if you don’t fit into just one category, the art community starts to feel like a giant lunchroom with no where left to sit (metaphorically speaking).

What brushes did you use for these?

It’s really lovely work, well done!

I would love to see how you approach drawing buildings with the grid in Procreate!

Love the vibe of these illustrations! I kinda struggle with not knowing when to and not to incorporate lines in illustrating so the comparisons are really helpful esp the textures on the painterly version ❤

Roms

Oh the vibe 🥰
