TUTORIAL // rendering water with minimal tools
Added 2021-10-26 10:50:44 +0000 UTCHey everyone! Here’s this month’s tutorial on rendering water with minimal tools. A patron reached out to ask how I render different textures using the same brush, so I wanted to tackle this subject with a focus on water! Some things that are discussed in this tutorial are:
• How to break a reference image down into ‘layers’ so that it’s easier to interpret and draw
• How I search for a strong reference image (something I've gotten a lot of questions about lately!)
• Using the lasso and gradient tool to set down the basic colors and shapes
• Using the hard round brush to render the shapes and finer details
Here's the final result of the study:

And here's a link to the ref image in case you want to tackle the same image too: https://stock.adobe.com/images/reflection-of-sky-on-the-moving-water-surface-in-the-pool/164649097
This tutorial builds on some previous resources that I’ve put together, so these might be good to check out if you haven’t seen them yet:
• A resource on how I use the lasso tool to create shapes
• A step-by-step detailing how I painted the wave study that I discuss in this tutorial
And here are some process videos in which I paint water:
• Process videos for ‘wave’ (which I mention in the tutorial): Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3
• Process video for a quick ocean study
• Process video for a river study: Part 1 / Part 2
If you’re having trouble watching this video in the app, it might help to watch it in a browser instead! And as always, let me know if you have any questions after watching this!

2021-10-26 19:27:51 +0000 UTCHey, Loish. Great tutorial! Loved it. I wanted to ask, though, what is the effect you added after you finished your study? It gives a 3D vibe, and I can't quite name it. There are red lines above and sometimes underneath a few shapes! I find it really lovely, and I was hoping you could explain to me what it is haha. Thank you!

2021-10-26 14:04:05 +0000 UTCThis was an excellent tutorial Loish! I’m so thankful to be your patron. I always learn so much from your content. I’d love to see how you approach metallic surfaces in a future video. I think that texture can be so varied with rust, dull areas, highly reflective parts etc.

2021-10-26 13:49:44 +0000 UTCI love that you added your face in the video! :) Can't wait to watch it, water is fascinating :) I thought that this month tutorial was supposed to be about environments in Procreate, is it planned for the future? (sorry to ask, since you just released a tutorial, I'm just very excited about environments and I think you mentioned it :) Thank youuuuu

2021-10-26 13:22:21 +0000 UTCI've just signed up as your Patreon, sat down to do a study of a beach and then I see a notification about this water tutorial! Perfect timing! Thank you :) Just now I'm realising I always want to do everything at once and usually get cought up in details, making my waves look like some dirt, haha :D

2021-10-26 13:07:09 +0000 UTCReally loved this. It was super interesting to see how expressive water can be in paintings! The face cam made it feel a lot more professional and also put me at ease that I'm not the only who does facial expressions while drawing haha!
