TUTORIAL // creating flowy & dynamic lines with ink
Added 2021-09-28 12:19:56 +0000 UTC
Note: sorry to repost this! There were some technical issues with the video so I had to repost. This one should work, if not, please do reach out!
Here it is: this month’s tutorial! It’s on inking, and more specifically on which techniques I use to get flowy and dynamic lines with ink. This was a huge challenge for me when I first started inking, and I figured out a few ways to overcome shaky and hesitant lines over time. I think it’s a lot about overcoming the anxiety of drawing in ink, since it feels so permanent! I talk about that a lot in this tutorial.
I filmed from two angles, one from the top so you can get a good overview of the drawing proess, and one from the side so you can get a better sense of how I hold my hand and how the tip of the pen touches the paper. I hope both of these angles combined give a good sense of how I approached the sketching and inking!
I mention my tools in the tutorial, and I also have an amazon affiliate shop with a list of the various tools I’ve used in the past which you can find here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/loish?listId=1TXJSUL3UMPMP
I also made a sketchbook tour for my first inktober sketchbook where I talk more about each drawing and the process behind them, which you can find here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/sketchbook-tour-34294418
It was really fun to do a traditional art tutorial and I’m excited to do more in the future! As always, feel free to post your feedback or any questions you might have! And happy inking :)
so glad you liked this one!

I've always loved to be messy on my ink drawings but I've never really understood what I it was that made me enjoy it so much. Now, listening to you speaking about your process helped me to understand it! The line weight is something I've struggled with a lot but the way you explained is very cool so I'm definitely applying more of the techniques you use on my own work. As always, thank you so much for sharing!!!

It might sound a little masochistic but hearing that you also struggle with arting sometimes is such a relief! Sometimes social media makes it look like everyone is flawlessly creating art, and that you're the only one struggling and that something is wrong with you (lol). So thanks for being so honest and open about talking about these things! It makes it much more encouraging to take on challenges like Inktober :)

Thanks much Loish! I was going crazy about this -- I'll try with different fineliners/paper and see how it goes. I think I've the same issue with colour pencils, they seem too hard and, well, muted for a tan paper.
Again, really loved this tutorial, hope to see more :))))

hey Nyaar! glad you liked it! as for your question, my first thought was indeed that the paper might be a bit too absorbent. your pen might also just not have a great flow to it. I don't think it's your hand! I personally use the moleskine paper because it's thick but fairly glossy so it's great for inking. I used a thicker paper for my most recent tutorial (https://www.patreon.com/posts/72102809) and I found that it was also way more difficult to get smooth lines with it, so I really think it is a paper issue!

I'm starting with ink myself and I looved revisiting this video :D Love the idea of using colour pencils for the sketch!
One thing I'd like to ask you about fineliners ... For now I use 03 for most of my work, and then thicken some of the lines, but I always feel like the pen struggles to give me enough ink -- not sure how to explain, but def it didn't feel that was an issue for you with your 01. I wonder if the paper I use is too demanding (its Strathmore 400 tan paper), the fineliners aren't the best, or is a problem with my hand haha. On more glossy papers the pen seems to glide nice. Do you have any thoughts on paper/pen combinations? Anything you know that doesn't work fine? Thank you <3

It does, yes ! Thank you for fixing this so quickly, I have a lot of inking ahead of me and this video is a real life savior. Love your work, love what you do here on Patreon. I hope I can meet you one day to chat !

Hey great video I am learning so much from this ! Unfortunately the video stops abruptly at 26 min. Is that normal or is there a part 2 somewhere that I am not seeing ?

I can’t tell you enough, how much I appreciate that you also show us work you did that you had some struggles with, it just really humanizes the artist, and the struggles we all go through with our art before we "get in the zone" or wtv XD It’s also very inspiring and encourages people to just keep going, keep trying, take the breaks that you need, it’s ok to feel discouraged, but keep doing what you love, you’ll get there eventually.

Hugely inspiring tutorial, thank you so much. I’ve admired your work for quite a while, and was really fond of this “ink+accents” style. Seeing this combined here, with a material breakdown and the thought process behind it was just what I needed. I really hope you will do more traditional media videos. My day job keeps me tied to a computer, and I currently enjoy stepping away from it in my free time, and also the haptics of traditional media.

i believe it's called the folio sketchbook A4 size! for the colors, i just stick to the general formula of warm accents with a nice amount of black&white contrast on top!

this is something i want to try too - using some looser brushes and allowing the lines to be a bit more organic. i do think i'll have to change my mindset a bit to achieve that!

I use ink with brushes and embrace the jitter a bit, but I’m going to play with some complete,y different ideas and methods generated from watching this. Thanks for the inspo

Thanks a lot for this super useful tutorial! Which moleskine do you use? (There are a lot of different types) . And I was wondering, how do you select the color combinations? They really go super well together!

Really appreciate the bit about having work arounds and just doing what works for you. My class is having us use traditional crow pens and brushes. I'm sure with practice they come in handy but it's just never been for me! I always felt I was "cheating" for using liners.
Wonderful ink piece, the process gives a lot of body and form when leaving in those rougher lines to peek through. I'll definitely try this approach! Thank you <3

Thank you very much for this video, I am looking at it while challenging myself to finally stick with inktober and use it as a space to experiment and not judge myself for each drawing! I loved seeing your process and it is also great that you shared where you struggled, it is also where I get a bit lost. The style you found is so beautiful! Hope to find a style myself one day and that is also why I am so looking forward for your next book!

I just got my tea and my blanket to watching this video because I really adore the fall season, Halloween, and pumpkins :D That was a great video I felt really warm and cozy! Learned about ink and I've never tried the challenge before, may it's my first time for the inktober because I've been encouraged by you. Also realized I really missed your style, trying and learn from it, making reproductions... Thank u as always for making these videos, have a gorgeous fall! 🎃

Thank you for this tutorial. I watched it yesterday and already used the techniques in a new drawing and wow the difference! I took a toile de Jouy class on skillshare a couple weeks ago and that style focuses heavily on line work too, so taking both techniques together is quite fun. I love your flow.

thank you! i was also thinking about a gouache tutorial, but i'm so new to the medium that i'm not sure i'd be able to pull it off haha. I need to get a workflow going before i can make a tutorial about it!

2021-10-01 07:44:22 +0000 UTC
that sounds like a good approach! especially if you already have some area of your art practice (life drawing) where you are able to be more loose and spontaneous, definitely channel that. it's about small daily commitments, so keep it attainable!

Thank you for this tutorial! It's so inspiring and puts in a right mindset. It encouraged me to get back to inks and make Inktober this year. I usually so stressed about the results, so it's either turns into hours working on a single drawing or more often to a creative block. I'll try to loose up and make it the same way I do on life drawing sessions.

This is so great! Funny thing; I went to a anatomy / nude session from my university and I learned from a video about quick drawings for animation to start from thin to thick. So I started out with my super floating narrow lines and when I was satisfied with the flow of the pose went on to use the same color pencil to flesh out the important shapes and volumes! Watching your digital procreate videos also helped me a lot to develop a new style so I was happy to see that you mentioned this technique!! Can't wait to finally use my inks again.
