EARLY ACCESS // gouache studies
Added 2021-08-20 09:00:02 +0000 UTCI finally sat down and broke out the gouache paints for the first time in almost a year! I want to spend more time doing traditional art, and from last year’s brushtober, I remember feeling like gouache worked best for me. I think I’m a bit scared to use them fully as paint, so I’m watering them down a lot and using them like watercolors. Gotta practice more and build my confidence!
I also included some process shots to show you guys how I started out with an orange base color before layering on the rest of the colors. I like this effect because the orange glows through the end result. I’m feeling out of practice but also excited to do more with gouache! Definitely heading out to the store to pick up some more colors soon!
For these, I used a derwent colorsoft pencil for the sketch, windsor & newton designer’s gouache for the paint, and watercolor paper with a smooth texture (schut aquarelbloc smooth 300 g/m2). I used reference for the faces.

i relate, i tend to go all watercolory when i'm not sure how i want to tackle it, and then it's scary to go opaque later on. i've found that limiting the palette can be helpful to avoid muddy colors!

2021-10-04 08:15:32 +0000 UTCThese are beautiful! Gouache is a tricky medium for me. I’m never certain whether I want to go watercolor effect or more opaque. It’s versatility makes it difficult for me to decide what to do and I often end up with blotchy mud, but all the possibilities are also exciting.

2021-10-03 04:19:21 +0000 UTCyes, that definitely bothers me haha! i can't fall back on my simple shortcuts. what really helps me is to keep it fairly simple. i use a similar range of colors and just mix them in different ways. it tends to work out if there aren't too many colors on my mixing plate!

I am honestly really scared to try oils haha. I'm afraid everything will blend into a brownish blob. maybe i should follow a tutorial or workshop to get the technique down!

2021-08-23 07:27:03 +0000 UTCLove these! Have you tried playing with posca paint pens? Its acrylic paint, but still has beautiful vibrant color with no clean up! They layer pretty great too. I've gotten into using them lately and I love them :)

I was so happy when they arrived in the mail in spring, but back then all the shops were closed due to Corona virus and I couldn‘t hunt for a frame that suited them. Now they have finally found their spot next to my dad‘s old barometer and I am one step closer to having my wall of natural philosophy.

And when you have the hang in it, you evenually will embrace what traditional techniques can give you in your art and yes can even put some new insights on the view on life :) Take care and when you feel like some paper and gouache: just do it :)

But I'll probably be doing more traditional art either way because it just feels way more satisfying than digital art for me at the moment!
