EARLY ACCESS // heads

Trying to get back into the flow of drawing after not drawing for three entire weeks! When I stop drawing for a while, it’s hard for me to feel motivated again. I think it’s because every time I draw, I make mental notes of something I want to improve at or explore in a future drawing session, which motivates me to continue. When I haven’t drawn in a while, I just don’t know what to focus on. It’s like I have to get the engine going and it’s a little bit harder than it would normally be! It also didn’t help that my first pfizer shot had me feeling totally exhausted for 4 days! Anyway, I decided to do some head studies to get the juices flowing again, with a focus on strong lighting. I’m feeling my creative flow slowly returning now :) Hope you like these!

I love the subtle add of color in the final version.^^

Great value

RC

Great. Thanks for sharing the reference. Wanted to see how you pushed the shapes and in this case the lighting too. Lovely!

thank you so much Dan! I do notice that, while I still have all the skills I need to draw after a long break, I am not as fast or efficient. I am much better at managing my time while drawing if I'm drawing regularly! But for the most part, it's indeed a motivational challenge.

I absolutely used reference from these! they were just pulled from google, so not stock photos as far as I know. these were the ref images I used: https://drive.google.com/file/d/13Hu0OGhFNDot-GYauiQq-4_huBDr6Zhj/view?usp=sharing

Love these. So dramatic! Just curious, did you use reference for these? Would you able to share if so? I struggle with stylizing reference and end up doing more likeness studies than 'referencing'.

Pavitra Pires

I love the drama you created with light and shadow. It is just so enjoyable to look at your art, even studies like this. Thanks for sharing your experience, I'm glad you're feeling better and that your creative juices are come back 😊

I hear you--even for me on trumpet, any time off leads to inertia. There's also (depending on the time off) a certain amount of physical atrophy, a small loss of muscle tone, making the initial session(s) back less productive, which is a hurdle that must be pushed through. Do you notice any changes in your technique or focus maintenance after laying off, or is the challenge mostly motivational? (And out of flow or not, the heads look great..."strong" is the first word I thought.) Thanks!

Thanks so much Lois & Moritz.

I'm sorry to read that. Indeed, one often cannot imagine that something that is so much a part of one's life, such as drawing, is suddenly no longer possible for health reasons. All the best wishes for you and I hope you get well soon.

Moritz Vahrmeyer

that's a smart plan. things usually work out in the end and that initial anxiety tends to fade!

Loish

it's what I always fall back on if I'm not sure what to draw :)

Loish

that's so intense, sorry you had to go through that!! i can imagine it takes a while to get into drawing again.. maybe you have to get used to a new way of working. best of luck with your healing process!

Great studies, I really love the energy your work has… I totally understand what it’s like to have time off & then find it takes a while to get back into the groove. I recently was out for 3 months, had an infection in my hand & was in & out of hospital, had 3 surgeries, so many antibiotics It’s unreal…. & I still don’t have full movement & feeling in it… may never get better than it is now. At least I’m able to draw again though, but it was such a long break… I’ve never felt as lost as I am atm, keep starting things & not going on with them.. so weird. Hope your all good now, the world needs more of your amazing work!

Me encanta Loish!! Me parece alucinante la facilidad que tienes de reflejar los volúmenes y mostrarlos de una manera tan plástica y gráfica a la vez. Me alegro mucho que estes mejor!!!

Thanks for sharing – looks great! On the subject of motivation, I can relate to what you describe. I actually permanently have several projects to juggle at the same time that require ideas and creativity, and often find it difficult to get back into the flow. However, since this has always been the case for me, I've gotten used to it by now and try not to pay too much attention to the initial feeling of lack of motivation. 😃

Moritz Vahrmeyer

thanks :) I am feeling better! my energy levels are back to normal again since thursday :)

Oh wow this is so gorgeous! Absolutely stunning!

It's good to hear you feel better! motivation sometimes is a hard thing... doing studies seems like a good idea! Will try it as well 😁

They look awesome! 🌸

thank you! I don't have any public pinterest boards. I do have a private one which is mostly just a collection of artwork that I like, but for reference, I tend to just consult google or stock photo resources! I feel like pinterest has too many 'perfect' photos and I'm usually looking for something a little rougher / less clean to use as ref.

Loish

They look so finished!! I was just thinking, do you have public pinterest boards you use for reference photos and inspiration?

aidreu

Thank you. Hope you’re feeling better.

Reading your caption, I think it would be cool if you made a post or a video on art block and how to get over it 🥰
