TUTORIAL // drawing animals
Added 2021-06-08 08:51:50 +0000 UTC
It’s time for this month’s tutorial: drawing animals! This is of course a very broad subject so I focused mainly on the challenges that I experience when drawing animals. Topics covered in this tutorial include:
• analyzing the reference image to see what the most important shapes are
• construction: going from the rough sketch to more detailed lines, and solving issues with the likeness throughout the process
• what to focus on: which details make the animal more believable and identifiable
• how to break up the basic shapes into smaller segments to get a sense of volume
• making animals with really simple shapes still look interesting
• capturing gesture & exaggerating for extra movement
• using fur patterns, whiskers, paws etc to enhance the form & recognizability of the animal sketch
• rendering with a focus on enhancing the volumes
I draw a lion, wolf, guinea fowl, and red panda! But I talk about how these principles can be applied to basically any animal. It ended up being quite long, so sorry about that! Let me know if you have any questions after watching it, and as always, hope you enjoy!
happy you found it helpful jessica! 😊

So helpful! I also am not the greatest with animals and I really want to get out of my comfort zone and get better with animals.

I tried to draw with you and my drawing was really ugly, but that made me saw my mistake and ask you, how do you make those beautiful and smooth shapes? Really, its amazing, I know you draw for a while but I really want to know what should i train or practice to make shapes this beautiful like yours

I’m a new member, someone has probably already said this, but the shape you drew for the body of the Guinea fowl was a cat’s eye shape.
I’m enjoying your tutorials and they encourage me to keep practicing drawing flowing lines

Finally watched this :) Found it very fun and useful to draw along (in the first half) and compare to your solutions, picking up a neat curve or hatching here and there. Wouldn’t mind more sketching sessions like that once in a while, especially animals.

This was an amazing tutorial, I can see immediate improvement in my sketching as a whole and this really helps me look further than simply drawing what I see as that is something I also struggle with since I learnt to draw the same way from references!
Thank you so much!

thank you! I talk a little bit about having fluid lines in this tutorial: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-warmups-47743894 it's mainly a question of forcing yourself to draw with more confidence and over time you'll get better at it :)

I LOVE when you do videos so we can see how you think! I'm always so impressed with how easy you make drawing look. Do you use specific exercises to keep your lines flowy and loose? I struggle with my lines looking too stiff

thank you! I'd definitely try to separate the neck fur from the body and legs, and try to capture the volumes in the face as well!

Thank you for making such great tutorials. Is there a place you generally like to look for reference pictures, or do you just search endlessly through google images until you find reference pictures you like?

Thank you for the very well made video. How would you give volume to a white shepherd puppy? It's just puppy coat and I'm having a hard time giving it some structure so it feels less 2d.

I love the video tutorial! Is this brush part of a brushpack I can find either on this patreon or somewhere else? Thanks!

hey holly! 'flow' is a setting in photoshop that makes the brush a bit softer. in procreate, that's usually the bottom slider on the left side, with the top one being size :)

Question: When you say you are setting a brush to a lower flow, what does that mean? (I work exclusively in Procreate for budget reasons, so this may be a Photoshop thing.)

I'm glad you liked it! It's hard to cover 'animals' in general since there are so many but hopefully this gives ideas on how to approach any animal sketch.

Wonderful video! I love your approach to painting the volume of the animal, rather than the fur (or at least not much). Your animals come out with so much personality. Thank you for sharing!

It's fun seeing how differently you go about looking at animals than I do :'D Though, our styles when drawing in general are very different. But most of the sketching process for humans I feel like I do it the same type of way, while with animals I do it quite differently XD
