TUTORIAL // drawing clothes
Added 2021-04-20 08:34:26 +0000 UTCIt’s time for this month’s tutorial, which is on drawing clothes! I focused on two main aspects: how to convey clothes in a believable way (especially the folds, volumes and detail density), and how to apply those principles to drawing clothing from the imagination. I talk a little bit about some character design principles too. I will be making a separate tutorial on painting and rendering clothes in the future, since that is a huge challenge on its own! For now, I hope you guys enjoy this one and as always, let me know if you have any questions!

I have not yet made that tutorial but I will add it to the list! It somehow completely slipped my mind over time!

2024-03-17 11:43:40 +0000 UTCthanks andy! glad you liked it! i think i could do more specific clothing-focused tutorials in the future, around things like folds, color schemes or volumes.

2022-09-29 09:50:10 +0000 UTCAhhh this was so helpful! I often struggle with clothing, and even when I try and use references to study I get overwhelmed so quickly because I don't know where to start with all the folds! If you've picked up anything new clothing wise would love more tutorials on it, but this was was nice and approachable with loads of great tips :)

2021-04-26 08:47:56 +0000 UTCThis was a really awesome tutorial! Will you make one about rendering clothes as well? With stuff like how to paint different materials, how they reflect light etc.?

2021-04-23 13:07:14 +0000 UTCI started collecting clothing references on Pinterest for future studies. Before, I spent quite a lot of time improving my figure drawing (with node models). But when I wanted to incorporate my knowledge to illustrations, I found myself in the situation that I don't know how to dress them up 😅

2021-04-23 10:12:58 +0000 UTChey anton! I recommend a mix of both, having dynamic movements with clothing can help a lot with learning how clothing can enhance a gesture! but relaxed poses are more practical for day to day casual poses, which I personally tend to draw more! I get most of my references from pinterest at the moment. my favorite stock reference source, adorkastock, tends to photograph in bodysuits / underwear so it's less useful in this case :')

2021-04-23 09:57:15 +0000 UTCThanks for being so informative with your tutorials! I can't wait to get a new one every month, such a treat. When study clothing, do you recommend to look for dynamic shots or more relaxed poses? Is there go-to resources you would recommend (besides Pinterest) were I can find references for daily practices?

2021-04-21 10:06:11 +0000 UTCthanks for your insights! I'm glad you liked it, and yes, as someone who is not that detail oriented, I learned through my character design work how important those details are! I will definitely be tackling those different textures and fabric types in a future tutorial :) thanks for your kind words!

2021-04-21 00:11:11 +0000 UTCThis tutorial was as others said before, amazing!, it really taught way to drawing clothes that i found easy and intuitive. This is a skill that I sincerelly lack, so i kept drawing monsters, dragons and men in metal armor. I will try to follow your tips and draw clothes now. Thanks Loish!

2021-04-20 17:12:46 +0000 UTCAmazing!! This is so detailed and insightful but taught in a very clear and simplistic way! Also I LOVE that you taught us to pay attention to the details in clothes to make them more practical (seams, zips, hardware etc) I work in fashion and when we have interns this is the main thing I teach them too! Drawing a beautiful garment is one thing but keeping in mind how to get into it is far more important. If you do make the rendering tutorial in-future could be super helpful if you showed techniques for painting different types of fabric! Examples: Sheer fabrics like lace, organza, chiffon all flow and fold differently from one another. Silk taffeta or double duchesse (like the first dress in your tutorial) have more jagged, angular folds while satin is more fluid and glossy. Unlike other fabrics, velvet has shadows in the middle and highlights at the edges. Etc. This knowledge is what people struggle with a lot, but can be extremely valuable for those who want to pursue design career-wise! 💖

2021-04-20 12:37:08 +0000 UTCLooove the part where you drew clothes from the imagination. It took me back to my childhood and paper dolls and swapping out their clothes. A Loish paper doll book would be awesome, lol.
