EARLY ACCESS // stylization studies

This year I’m going to be working on my third artbook, which will be about my style. Since I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot, I decided to do a study where I draw the same reference photo in different levels of stylization. The first is more ‘realistic’ and the one on the right is more stylized and exaggerated. I think it’s interesting to see which elements become more emphasized, and which ones fall away when artists stylize a subject. It’s such an interesting topic. Maybe a good one to do a Q&A about sometime soon! Let me know if that would be interesting for you guys. For now, hope you like this little experiment!

I think this is a fascinating topic and not often explored!

Becks Chu

this is a great topic idea! i will add it to the list! i'm working on my clothing tutorial today and i'll be talking a bit about stylization there.

Loish

I would be really interested in a tutorial about stylization. Lately, I've been trying to get away from realism but am struggling with how to exaggerate & stylize.

France

it will probably be released in september! but the book will be available after the campaign as well, so you can buy it whenever it works for you :)

Loish

ah yeah! I think style is not just how you draw, but also like.. what are the creative choices you make to improve and grow? I think it's a good sign that you assess your own style and think about how it could be better. You could find examples of art that aren't 'boring' and push your style more in that direction :) I do the same thing, bc I feel like my work isn't dynamic enough so I reference a lot of more dynamic art when I paint.

Loish

This is so cool! I'm struggling with my style rn. Everyone tells me "Just how you draw is your style!" But If that's the case, I feel like mine is boring...

Lindsey Harrington

I'm excited for a new book! But I must save up! About when do you think the Kickstarter might be up? End of the year, next year? I need to know when to plan for!! Good luck, my dear! Looking forward to it!

I’m in ❤️

Paulina Walachowska

yes i totally agree. usually when people think they have no style, or are conveying something realistically, there's a style showing that the artist themselves might not see!

Loish

Oh, that sounds like an extremely interesting subject for an artbook. "Realism" is such an interesting subject too, because it is often treated as something objective while it really isn't. When I observe my perception, slightly stylized depictions that emphasise the planes of an object while keeping a lively flow feel much more "realistic" to me than photographs.

Anska

definitely! i will be sharing tidbits of the process of putting together the book :)

Loish

haha happy to hear that!

Loish

it's always fun to play around with art like that! i feel like only good things come from it!

Loish

I looooove this 😍

Mona

that's a really good question and something I have a lot of thoughts on! I would love to elaborate on that more in a Q&A. short answer though, i think even artists who are good at adapting to different styles have a style of their own, they often just don't see it as clearly as others would :)

Loish

thank you so much! I don't do portfolio reviews at the moment. I find it so hard to give feedback on someone's art without more context about someone's goals, dreams, history with art.. i know that sounds ridiculous but I just have a hard time judging something without more context. so usually I stick to doing them 1-on-1, face to face, with lots of time to go deeper. sorry about that ^^;

Loish

I want to echo rachael Sparks... I can do many things, but cannot settle on a style

Tersh

This is awesome as is everything you post! Everything is super helpful, I’ve learned a lot from following you! I have a quick question: do you do portfolio reviews ? I would gladly watch a hour or so video of you just reviewing portfolios, keep up the greatness!

Ognjen Janjetovic

Terrifically interested. Great topic!

Greg Schultz

That would be great! I have trouble with realism and going from that to stylization so the breakdown of both would be amazing to see! Love this!

Lauren Nicole

I'm in!

Joseph Jolton

omg , Loish! Hoooooow? You are so awesome ! And i'd LOVE a Q & A !

Raquel Ardon

I absolutely wanna Q&A that, and what I would ask is “what are some things we could practice in an effort to dial in on our own personal style? How to make these results repeatable?” I’m a multimedia multitalented artist and so it’s super easy for me to copycat other styles or go super realistic or do simple gestures... but how do I establish my own style as a solid consistent thing?

Rachael J. Sparks

I totally need that artbook and topics of stylized characters in my life!!!

Valmor

I would really love to hear you discuss stylization more. I have really been wanting to make a leap from realism into more stylized figures, and I am really struggling with figuring out how and what to adapt to get a convincing figure I'm pleased with. I feel that I could learn a lot by listening to you talk about the choices you make when you draw in your style.

Holly Westlund

This feels a lot like your series of studies last year with very vivid lighting. The realistic one also has a vibe very much like your environmental speedpaints series. *chin hands* I wonder what would happen if I did a 100 landscapes series and played around with those concepts? I don’t think I’d wind up with stuff just like yours, but it might be a nice break from the stuff I’ve been doing.

Emily Cartier

This will be awesome!!

Gurveen Kaur

OMG, yes please!! This would be super super helpful. <3 Also, I can't wait to get an email from 3D total – 2021 looks like one fab year *just* because of that. <3

Rali M.

Are you kidding me? It is super interesting to hear everything you have to say regarding this topic. I NEED it in my life! Sorry I'm too excited 🤭

Kingsley Onwuchekwa

Oh, yes please. Stylized anatomy and portrait from realistic references is a definite struggle of mine. Would definitely like a Q&A or a study on this subject. Thank you, Loish!

Tom

I would love a Q&A about that, it's such an interesting topic :)

Elise Leonard

Ohh a Q/A sounds so so good!!! And I'm so excited for the book yay!!

Aadishri Soni

I would love a q&a about that! especially in regards to doing stylized studies. I'm currently working on developing a faster method/style of doing studies with emphasis on making it dynamic, which is something you really excel at so I would love to hear your thoughts on how to approach this.

Mikaela Stulen

Ah I can't wait for the book! And yes! A Q&A would be awesome!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Cozy Cat (Andrea)

This is beautiful, can’t wait to see the process of the third book 💖

Prawlette
