EARLY ACCESS // overcast skies

I’ve been hiking a lot this winter, and seen a lot of this kind of view: heather fields with overcast skies. It’s typical dutch nature during this time of year. Here are some quick studies, in which I played around with textured brushes to get the clouds right. There’s also some close-ups and the original ref photos!

thank you! I think my tutorial about drawing landscapes from reference gives some insight into this, here's the link if you haven't seen it already! https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-44069788

What I am curious the most is how you analyse and interpret reality and put them in to shape. You paint great landscapes.

I love your landscape pieces. And I really appreciate you included the reference photos, its really cool to see how you interpret them for final illustrations.

The sky of that first one is so amazing!

So pretty, Lois! I really feel the warmth of the sun on left and the gentle softness of the trees on the right.

I think what makes these especially charming is the incredibly accurate lighting paired with the expressive shapes and strokes you use to create the work. It's such a pleasure to look at. Thank you for sharing!

I love how much vibrancy you’ve put into an image that most would just make grey and colourless! Beautiful 💕

Jess Diggins

thanks! my boyfriend also thought it was a photo haha

Loish

Hard to tell what is the ref and what is painted. Beautiful work.

I'm so happy to see you branch into other subjects. The beautiful portraits you do must surely make a living for you, but pushing into other topics has to broaden your skill and your impact. Keep it up!

yeah it's a rough time. hopefully we can return to normal life soon. I miss going to germany too, we've been to some areas near the border and were sad that we couldn't hike in germany :( thank you for your kind words by the way!

Loish

They are so beautiful! German Münsterland looks very much like that, which isn‘t much of a surprise given the short geographical distance. Love it! I miss going over to the Netherlands. My parents in law live so close, that on hikes we‘re like „we could walk there“ and they‘re answering „no, we can‘t, that‘s netherlands, we‘re not allowed now“... 😩

The muddy clouds and the blurry sun are so well done here. I wanna copy those brush strokes.

Abhi Johal
