UPDATE // the winter months have passed!
Added 2021-02-28 10:28:19 +0000 UTCFebruary is amost over! I'm overjoyed, because this means that SPRING is coming!!! I truly can't wait to watch the world blossom around me and to spend more time in my backyard. I've been counting down the days! Here's a little review of how this month has gone for me:
STUDIES
Making sketches and studies has been my comfort zone lately. For some reason I’m feeling apprehensive about starting new paintings, and I just wanna keep doodling. That might have to do with this month’s tutorial, which got me thinking about how rewarding sketch sessions are. But I also feel like my ideas for bigger paintings are starting to dry out and I might have to dive into pinterest to find some inspiration. How are you guys doing creatively? Are you feeling inspired or are you between ideas, like me?
WARMUPS & EXERCISES TUTORIAL
Making this month’s tutorial was so much fun because it was so much more about mindset. This is a topic that interests me a lot! I’ve just seen a huge focus on drill-sargeant style learning for art, where artists are always internally screaming at themselves to do more and better. For some people that approach works, but for a lot of artists it becomes the source of artblock and a negative image of one’s own skills. So I always try to emphasize how important it is to be gentle on ourselves, allow ourselves to have fun, and allow mistakes to occur. I think that mindset is better for longevity: it allows us to continue to draw and be creative for a long time. I’m so glad I was able to talk more about it! Next month's tutorial will be on giving sketches a presentable look quickly & efficiently, which I'm also really pumped to do!
As always, thanks so much for your support! I'll be sending out links to this month's google drive folder today. If you have any feedback or questions, please feel free to share them with me through a direct message or e-mail to loishh@gmail.com. Any and all feedback is welcome! I hope you’ll continue to be my patron and enjoy the content coming up next month! ❤

2021-03-19 16:31:46 +0000 UTCthank you! it's interesting that you say that, because I've been thinking about drawing animals in a more portrait-like style that I usually use for human characters!

2021-03-19 08:38:43 +0000 UTCI know I'm late to the party, but sometimes trying to draw a subject I'm not used to helps. I mostly draw horses. So when I got into a rut this past month I started thinking about drawing mythical animals. Ones that are already in "existence" and ones that I just makeup for the fun of it. Since you mostly draw people and environments maybe try a portrait in your style of an animal in an environment that's a bit different from what you usually paint? Also thank you for the "be gentle" with ourselves note. I find that I often get blocked by my own feelings of inadequacy because I'm not doing art the "right" way. This only makes it so I end up doing nothing, and learning just as much lol.

2021-03-18 22:14:15 +0000 UTCI'm so glad you're enjoying it! there are so many artists out there that reconnect with art at a later age because art school destroyed their creativity. it's sadly such a common story. sometimes I wonder if the point of art schools is to weed people out rather than build them up? it seems like it sometimes. I'm glad you are getting back into your creative flow!

2021-03-03 10:01:12 +0000 UTCThank you so much for your videos and other write-ups, they're super helpful! I've been getting back into art lately, and February in particular was extremely productive and rewarding for me. After taking an approximately 5 year long break (maybe more idk, I've lost track of time by now) due to my artistic spirit being broken by art-school, I'm finally being reunited with art and rediscovering the joy of drawing/painting what I ACTUALLY LIKE instead of trying to pretend to be and like something that I don't actually care much for..... Related to this, I actually just watched your talk with Iris Compiet on youtube yesterday. It was great to hear others talk about the struggles related to art school and creating "guilty pleasure" art and made me feel less alone (in lack of a better word). If you ever feel like making more videos talking about this, I personally would be very interested haha. Anyway, thanks again for the great content :D

2021-03-03 01:06:53 +0000 UTCthank you! I wanted them to be shorter initially, but i discovered that I can't talk about a topic for less than 40 minutes haha. I just have too much I always wanna say about it!

2021-03-01 03:17:54 +0000 UTCI've been participating in a creativity workshop on SkillShare which has been lots of fun so far and I've got three new characters that have appeared in all of my paintings so far, so I guess I'll have to name them. :D

2021-02-28 14:33:43 +0000 UTCThanks Loish for everything. Glad you are having spring. I live in South Africa so it is always hot. I have so many Ideas for you. I just love your art. My entire community does. It's amazing. We love waiting to see that patreon notification pop up everyday or every second day. Maybe you can finish some old wips and maybe you can really do some more ocean art. My ideas for new art are A greek goddess, a mermaid , a lady made out of water, ursula from the little mermaid, another self portrait. Some sea animal practices and lastly an underwater enchantress . Hope you like my ideas. But pinterest have great inspiration.

2021-02-28 14:32:36 +0000 UTCIt's been warmer here too - not yet spring, but a taste of it. I've been loving it! And there's nothing wrong with following your motivation and continuing with sketches while you want. Inspiration will strike soon enough!

2021-02-28 13:56:30 +0000 UTCThank you for your videos. I love them. They’re a good length too, easy to watch, especially if you have kids and have to pause to chase them around. These are tutorials that I can come back to and they’re very inspiring!
