STEP-BY-STEP // speedpainting interiors
Added 2021-02-04 10:00:00 +0000 UTCYou guys might have noticed that I’ve been drawing more interiors lately! I always struggled with interiors in the past because I’m not great with perspective and scale. I still have a long way to go but I find that doing quick speedpaint studies helps me learn the most! The hardest part for me was setting it up, because I was using a technique that was more suitable for character art.
So for those of you who struggle with similar issues, I put together a step by step showing how I set up an interior speedpaint. The main difference in my workflow when I draw interiors is:
- I use a lot more layers. I add each main element - like the couch, table, chair, etc - on a separate layer so I can easily use transform tools to adjust them, and later on lock the transparency and add shading to each shape.
- I’m less reliant on the sketch lines. I just ditch them altogether later on in the process. Usually because my initial sketch is a bit off and I fix those mistakes later on, so the sketch just becomes distracting.
- I do less with the brush tool and more with the lasso tool. When I use a brush too much on interiors, it all gets really smushy and overly smoothed out, so I stick to harder edges with the lasso and try to get soft gradations with feathered lasso / gradient instead of the brush.

But the lasso tool is so cool and seem to work much better in PS than procreate. So I’m playing with PS on iPad. If you use it have you thought about an tutorial for that?😅

2021-02-05 09:37:50 +0000 UTCyes it's a great tool! if you're using photoshop, it sounds like the issue is that you don't have the right settings. when you open your gradient tool, you'll get a new menu at the top. one of those items is a little box with your gradient color in it. if you click on the arrow next to that, you can choose "foreground to transparent" from the 'basics' option. that will give you the same type of gradient that i have :)
