PROCESS VIDEO // rising - part 2

This is the one where I flesh out the details to prep the image for the final stage of rendering and detailing. I fix any mistakes from the previous steps and start working out the amount of detail I want in my painting. The painting can still look rough at this stage, but when looking at the thumbnail (which I have in the upper right side), it needs to resemble the finished work. I sped it up to twice the original speed, but you can slow it up or speed it down by clicking on the gear button!
Some pointers for this video:
- I think this video shows quite well how I change and adjust things as I go. You can see me changing the position of the hands many times, as well as the position of her leg and the shape of the dress. A big part of my process is keeping the early stages really rough and working out those details later, so that I don’t get stuck on those details in an early stage. It just keeps the process more intuitive and easy for me!
- The way I approach this phase is to focus on one area - usually the focal point, which is often the face in my paintings - and work on cleaning up the details there. then I’ll zoom out and look at which other areas need the same attention. I’ll do that in phases, going from one area to the next until the whole image has “levelled up” in terms of detail. I like to do it this way because it lets me focus on the areas that need it, and other areas can stay rough and that still looks okay. I don’t want to polish everything equally, but I want a nice balance of clean and rough elements.
- The main tools I’m using at this stage is just the hard round brush and the lasso tool. The different layers are just different phase of the painting - the oldest version is on the bottom and the newest on the top. That way I can click the layer on and off to compare it to earlier stages.

I use a 27 inch cintiq! For me, having a bigger size is really helpful in my painting process. But it's obviously not a requirement for making digital art :)

I have a 12" tablet and wonder how large an image I could work with on that 7"x12" canvas. I realize I can zoom in and out, but room to swing a brush seems tight at times.
