BRUSHTOBER // watercolor final pieces

I spent this weekend trying out watercolors for week 3 of brushtober! The theme was nature in autumn so of course I had to paint a forest and some mushrooms :) I filmed the full process for these, I'll be editing / rendering out that video this week so you can see how I handle watercolors! I definitely fell in love with this medium and want to create more with it in the future. This week: Acrylics! I'm so scared haha! Wish me luck :)
Really enjoy seeing how your style and way of working is transferred over into traditional mediums! Very cool 💛

It‘s really lovely to watch your brushtober paintings and the mushrooms are my absolute favorites at this point. Apart from being very cute mushrooms I love how the drawings flow into each other, so the whole painting is like a little stroll from one mushroom to the next. Will you by any chance be selling prints of them or any of your other pages with multiple studies on them?

Watercolor is fun, I’ve blown through about half a pad of Canson XL this week since I got my hands on tube colors again. It’s cheap ass paper so it’s prone to doing funny blooms and it’s not easy to get smooth washes. But I’m loving the way the tube colors combine with my watercolor pencils on it, and the way they don’t smear. Lefty == smear is my nemesis. It’s also letting me bang out the rough spots of color mixing with the tubes before I dive into doing hideous experiments on some gelatin sized toned paper I have that’s ultra light weight but handles really nice.

I love the mushroom studies so much! I've always correlated mushrooms with your art because you had that phase awhile ago where you incorporated them into your pieces quite a bit, haha 😋
I've used acrylics quite a lot and they're my go-to painting medium. From what you said before, it sounds like the main issue you were having with them is that you were using too much water. Acrylics are extremely versatile and forgiving, because you can easily paint over them in as many layers as you want to fix things. I've found that they work best when you keep them very opaque, and only dip the brush in a bit of water every once in awhile. After you're done with base coloring and it's dry, you can water your strokes down more to get a more transparent wash for shadows and adding colors/blending. But just keep layering and playing with the amount of water you use and I think you'll find your flow! Also, I'd highly recommend getting canvas paper for acrylics because otherwise they'd wear through the paper. Even the cheap pads of canvas paper work great for acrylics 🙂 I hope that helps!

It's amazing how you manage to "get it" when you try a new media! Love those ones so much 😍

ah yeah, i understand! you can use gouache in a similar way to watercolors if you want though. maybe that's a good way to transition into the medium!

I looove these pieces 🥰 Beautiful. I also love watercolor. I love how it flows, smells... and color mixing, creating new colors is very relaxing to me. Also fun to learn about pigments, how different companies create new colors with them etc. So, as it seems I love this topic 😊

Acrylic and gouache scare me as well. I have a gouache colors sitting in my closet for long. I think because they're opaque medium and the fact that I struggle with mixing colors makes me not wanna use them at all
