PROCESS VIDEO // generating ideas in procreate, part 1
Added 2020-10-07 08:00:00 +0000 UTC
Here’s a new type of video for you guys! It’s my first time making one of these so I’d love to hear your feedback. Basically I filmed the thumbnailing process of my Procreate commission, and kinda talked through it, explaining more about what I was thinking and aiming for. I think that it’s one of the most honest process videos I’ve made because it shows how much I go back and forth, try random stuff, and just kinda wing it! Because of that it's a bit unstructured and chaotic in terms of workflow, but hopefully it shows you guys what my process is like.
Because I talk intermittently and there’s a lot of pauses in between, I put some relaxing royalty free music underneath. It’s my first time combining voice-over with music, so let me know what you think. Do you like it or do you prefer it without music?
More info about the procreate brushes I like to use here (includes links): https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-i-34615265
This is part 1, part 2 is coming up soon!
thanks so much!

This was extremely helpful considering I’m still trying to grasp procreate!! Thank you so much for the break down of your ideas and how you think about lighting, etc. It’s amazing!

AbsoLUTELY love watching and listening to you break down what you’re thinking as you sketch and the elements you see that you like or the elements that you don’t like and what steps you take toward changing them. SO informative and extraordinarily helpful! Thank you so much!

Hi, Lois! Thank you for the great video! This question may be quite random but can you share where did you get the background music from. I am also doing art videos and finding music is hard, I have some but already used them a couple of times.

haha this is such a good example of why it's important to work out the details a bit for client work. something that's obvious to me is not obvious to other people a lot of the time!

sounds good, I will do that next time! The second part is about adding b&w values. I didn't film the coloring process for this, but this month's tutorial about procreate will address adding color!

definitely! especially when I feel the pressure to create something good, which in this case was definitely there due to it being a commission, I get frustrated with a lot of my initial ideas. I just try to keep the process moving and avoid getting stuck as much as I can!

Really enjoyed seeing the rawness of this video and watching the back and forth happen. The music was at a good level for me personally, something to fill the silence but not too in the way. Looking forward to part two :)

This is really helpful! As someone who is new to digital art i often get frustrated with one sketch and will work at that one sketch for hoursssssss. It’s cool to see that the pros get frustrated too and instead of just staring at it you just scrap it and move on to the next! Thanks for showing us this :)

Thank you for this, it's really interesting to see your process of sketching, how you come up with the ideas and what your thoughts about it are, I really appreciate it! I also like the music very much, it's so calming :) Maybe I would suggest to have music through out all the video, even under your talk, but the music would be lower volume? (If that makes sense) But I also like it as is, it's just an idea :) Will the second part be about coloring? I would love that so very much! Lastly, I also love the sketch with fish, I see them gold and glowing already :)) any intentions working on it too? :) Thank you as always, you're the best!

On the one that became the Procreate commission, I kept seeing calla lilies for things you meant to be hand shapes. I think my brain is seeing the initial sketch hands/arms as more like a hands behind back ballet pose. So the transformation from something that’s clear to you is definitely a transformation for my brain, very fun to see.
