BRUSHTOBER // week 1 - gouache & acrylic
Added 2020-10-05 09:42:06 +0000 UTC
Week one of my #brushtober challenge is complete! Over the weekend I tested out gouache and acrylic, and I’m not gonna lie, it was rough. A part of me regrets taking on this challenge because I have such a long way to go in figuring out how to make this work for me! 😂 But then I remind myself that the reason I decided to do this is to expand my skills. Let’s hope I can figure this out before the end of the month!
To finish this experimental week, I made the first drawing with a mix of watercolor and gouache, testing how it would look if I worked from a rough sketch. The other images are of my initial gouache and acrylic test sketches. I uploaded the large version of the file so you can see the notes that I wrote! My main takeaway is that I watered down the acrylic way too much and need to buy some mediums to get more of a gloopy, creamy effect. So far I’m digging gouache the most, but maybe that will change if I use acrylic properly!
This week I’m doing slice of life sketches with ink wash & ecoline, wish me luck guys! As patrons, would you like to see some behind the scenes content for the brushtober stuff? If so, what would you like to see: step-by-steps, process videos, or anything else?
me too please, would love to see your process in 'traditional' media :)

I agree with Jorge.

i felt like they worked together well because both gouache and watercolor can have that soft, watered down effect! and it felt good to 'paint' the final details in more intense colors than watercolor could.

thanks! that's what i was surprised about with inktober in the past: that i found a way of handling it that felt like 'my style'. i hope i find it with these new media too.

Beautiful! Major kudos to you for pushing yourself outside your comfort zone! I struggle to really experiment with new mediums because I expect myself to be good at them straight away and get frustrated when that's not the case 😂 Your notes and experiments are so lovely and neat and I appreciate you sharing them with us!

These are really lovely Lois! It's so neat to see you experiment and it looks like a new style is emerging. Different than your other work, but beautiful all the same!

I'd love to see step by step and sketch to finished side by side comparisons. I feel like with traditional mediums I tend to overthink my initial sketch and then ruin it with the colors haha.

Lovely! And, btw, you can have both... Liquitex makes an acrylic gouache!

I just love how loose this final piece came out though! There's something so charming about the texture in traditional media. I'm really impressed with your commitment to this challenge and wish you the best! <33

I love what you've done with your experimental pages. Even those look beautiful! A behind the scenes look would be nice. I don't mind want you did here. Showing your sketches and studies that lead to the final painting.

It looks amazing, I love how you play with colours the same way you do digitaly :) My favourite is the one with closed eyes and short hair, looks beautiful!

I know you say you struggled with the different media... BUT... I absolutely love seeing these studies! A process video would be amazing and I'd definitely want to see more brushtober stuff from you Lois! <3
How did you feel about mixing watercolor with gouache? I'm curious because gouache can be applied with a lot less water so the process may be slightly different?

seconding this! i really like seeing your technique and how you approach things from start to finish. also on gouache, there's a really lovely tutorial that helped me understand a lot about the process of layering it effectively! it's called the tea to butter method, i thought i might share! https://youtu.be/iMz3adIVjJM

It's beautiful Lois! The wildest combination I've ever done was watercolor and copic marker :p I also love to experiment!
