TUTORIAL VIDEO // constructing faces & expressions

Here it is: the third tutorial I’ve created exclusively for you patrons! This one is about head construction and expressions, and talks about the basic construction, different angles, squash & stretch, and scanning reference images for expressions. I hope you guys enjoy it!

Some stuff I refer to in the video:

• I talk a bit about some principles from my first tutorial on pose construction. If you haven’t seen that yet, watch it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-video-38377684

 • As always, stock reference from the lovely senshistock! https://senshistock.deviantart.com/art/The-Best-of-Harley-Mask-Pack-on-SenshiStock-com-645292924

 • I talk a bit about Jin Kim’s designs for Tangled. You can find the artbook, where I first saw these beautiful model sheets, here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0811875555/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0811875555&linkCode=as2&tag=loish0d-20&linkId=608d632dd9843a4f02e04a64ac2ce408

If you have any questions, just post it below! Enjoy :)

that's so cool! roger rabbit definitely has that classic animation approach. it probably had some amazing smear frames too! glad you liked the vide, Michael!

Loish

I attended a very early showing of the movie “Rodger Rabbit’ at a theater very near the Art Center annex building on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, CA. Talk about ‘over-the-top’ squash & stretch‼️. Perfect! I was thinking (wouldn’t be funny if human beings could do all the things that Rodger (and others) in the movie could do)??🤨😵‍💫🤣 Another VERY informative video…..thank you!😍

Michael H

Ah thank you!!!

Emma

I do, actually! You can find it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-hair-46112695

Loish

I just barely joined and am making my way through all your tutorials. They are SOOO helpful! Thank you so much for all of these! Do you have one specifically for hair that I am missing?

Emma

hahaha i didn't even notice that! incredible that the timing actually supports the message.

Loish

Very helpful video! At 39:10 you talk about happy expressions and someone whistles in the background. That was very funny :D

Hannes

Thank you. Hmmmm I see it now on top though. So must of been a glitch! Thank you though!

Sharon Tu

hey sharon! sorry to hear that. could you send me more info about the problem you're experiencing? then i can pass it on to the patreon staff and hopefully they can fix it. for now, you can also watch the videos from the list here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/update-subtitled-72727898

Loish

I don’t see the video here?

Sharon Tu

that is truly a beautiful thing about the internet!

Loish

I just love the internet , i am literally being taught by one of the best artists of our time while i am living in the most remote city in india. What a great time to be alive

Mukunda Madhab Sharma

Sam Lam

wow! I'm so happy to hear that stewart. digital art can be tough, it needs to 'click' in a way and getting there can be a long process. i'm glad this was helpful!

Loish

I have had a love hate relationship with digital art - I love it, it hates me. By following this tutorial I did the best piece I've ever done, which completely restored my faith in my abilities. So, thank you.

Stewart Wells

thank you! in my case, my art loses the movement the more detail I add, so that's why I try to maximize it as much as I can in the early stages :)

Loish

thank you so much for your support!

Loish

Your tutorials are so useful, I'm really happy that I've became one of your patreons :D Love all your work!

Roksana Salwerowicz

So impressed how your very first few lines already establish stylization and movement. I’m prone to trying to add that on later, but now see this should be there from the beginning. Great insights!

Kolja Kähler

I'm so glad it helped holly!

Loish

Simplifying and stylizing are very hard for me, and this video helped me make a significant brain shift. Thank you!

Holly Westlund

Niquey

Hoàng Cù

i'm so glad you found it useful!

Loish

I tried Loomis method, manga methods and i failed. The loish method solve my problem with the head angles. You are a incredible teacher. The horizontal line could be "vision line". Thanx you very very very much, Loish. P.D: the pose tutorial is 10/10 too

Richard

haha it's one of the most fun animation principles!

Loish

I can’t stop saying squash and stretch now 🤣 so fun!

Nicole May

happy to hear that julian! i always prefer to just explain how i do it, rather than bring in all sorts of complex terminology. i hope that helps make it more understanable in some way!

Loish

thank you!!! this is old school stuff but very useful. Suffering badly from tutorial overloads and positive procrastination you simplified everything and just make it easier to follow in terms of just getting stuff done

Julian Howard

Loish

Elise Leonard

woops sorry I didn't mention that! YES it is the macalabs sketch brush!

Loish

Hi Loish, another amazing tutorial :) Thank you so much (I've watched the one about colors last night and it's the first time that I hear this kind of intuitive approach, and it speak a lot to me, more than every other explanations about color rules)! Can't wait to try it on my futur characters. What is the brush you're using at 15:40 for the "sweeping lines" (I'm looking for that kind of brushes for my gesture drawings). Is it still the Macalabs sketch brushes that you previously was talking about?

Elise Leonard

I haven't watched it yet and I'm loving it already! Can't wait to go through it, thank youuuuuu!!!
