After posting the rock and plant studies, I got a lot of questions about my process for them so I decided to put together a little step-by-step!
Using these steps really sped up my process for drawing things like this. Before I started using the lasso tool, drawing something like this was really cumbersome and took a lot of time because it’s hard to get all those details right with just a brush. By using the lasso tool, it’s just so much faster and easier. It’s not only a fast way to layer the colors but it’s also great for finer, sharper details. Somehow the shapes are just much more interesting. On top of that, I can use color modifying tools to quickly apply changes, which is a lot faster than choosing a color and then painting it on!
When drawing objects, the main thing that helps me is to scan over the reference image and try to figure out what the most important defining features are. If you want to work fast, then you can’t capture ALL of the details - so try to figure out which details define the object (light, curves, chunks, etc) and focus on those!
If you want to use this technique, think of it this way: you’re layering down the most important colors and details so that when you start painting, it’s just a matter of using the eyedropper and hacking away at it. You want to make sure most of the colors and details are there so that the painting at the end is easy and intuitive!
For more info about using the lasso tool, I put together a resource last month which you can find here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/step-by-step-36570445
Hope you guys find this useful!!
