STEP BY STEP // lasso tool

I’ve been using the lasso tool more and more often in my process lately, so I wanted to throw together a quick resource so you guys can see how I use it. I used this technique a lot for the process of Ruffle (https://www.patreon.com/posts/process-video-1-35213520) and also for the thumbnails that I created for the volcano and wave piece. I’ll be uploading videos for those as soon as I get the time to edit and render them! But for now, I hope you’ll find this resource helpful!

STEP BY STEP // lasso tool

Comments

I've never used it, but I read online that you can do this by using Menu → Selection → Blur Border!

Loish

Does Clip Studio Paint had similar lasso tool effects like feather and all?

Ivett Opolcsik

hey Ana! I have a tutorial on using the lasso tool with textured brushes, there's a section in there where I talk about using that technique in Procreate including a little demo. It starts at 18:45 minutes in! You can find it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-soft-94305496

Loish

Hello Loish, is there a process similar to the lasso tool with procreate, I have never used Photoshop for drawing, only for photos.

Ana B

yay! it's a lot of fun once you get the hang of it!

Loish

I decided to dive into this today as well and playing around with these was really fun!! Making gradients was very satisfying as well.

Amanda Gaston

I haven't tried Clip studio paint in a long time but I will dive into it net month and see how the tools work there!

Loish

Hi Loish! I'm just wondering if there's an alternative feather lasso tool in Clip Studio Paint?

Royce Yvonne Ortega

Hey Johan! Thanks so much for your kind words 😊 it sounds like you may have the “foreground to background” gradient setting on. That basically fills the entire selection with a gradient from one color to another. You should be able to set the gradient to “foreground to transparent” - then you’ll get a translucent gradient! Here’s a little article on it: https://skylum.com/how-to/how-to-create-a-transparent-gradient-in-photoshop Let me know if that helps!

Loish

Hi Loish, it is great to see how you work by sharing this step-by-step cheat sheet with us. I love to learn, so this is great! While trying the steps I struggle with the 'Lasso and gradient' in step 2. I try the steps, but don't get the effect as shown in the tutrial. In my case the gradient is applied to the total selected area, instead of just the basic shape. Any suggestion where I'm going wrong? (I use Photoshop on a Wacom Cintiq) Regards! Johan

Johan Postma

hey fred! you should be able to do the same steps in procreate - the same tools exist, except procreate doesn't have a gradient tool!

Loish

Hey Loish! Do you think you do this tut in procreate soon? Thanks for this great ideas, tips….

fred hellec

Thank you Loish! Looking forward to your update! <3

AV

hey! yes absolutely, I can do that! I'll put it on the to-do list and create it when I get the time!

Loish

Hi Loish! Could you please consider making a tut like this but for Procreate instead? I'm sure it's only a few switches in buttons, but as a visual, step-by-step learner, it'd be so awesome to see a Procreate-geared one instead of mentally substituting certain steps of the Photoshop one. Thank you!!

AV

yes, you can use the same process in procreate! except that you don't have gradients in procreate, so you need to just use a soft brush instead.

Loish

Does this work for procreate too?

Ava C

CSP Users...go to Select - Blur Border. You can only go from 1 to 10 and from what I've seen those are mm.

Jean Claude de La Ronde

There isn't any tool in CSP that does the Feathering. The closest workaround that I found is Bluring a selection and going at it by trial and error. A bit annoying until CSP comes out with a sub tool of the lasso tool. I'll send them a memo on the subject.

Jean Claude de La Ronde

i'm glad you found it helpful! and if you run into any issues let me know, it's always helpful for me to have a sense of what different types of software can do.

Loish

Hi Loish, I just joined your Patreon and I wanted to thank you for all the great content that you put out there in the Digital Realm. This Lasso technique is great! I can't wait to try it out. I'm sure this will work as well in Clip Studio Paint.

Jean Claude de La Ronde

Love this !

Sadie Nemanishen

such an useful trick! thank you

cher3

This is super helpful!

megamaster

Yes it’s entirely possible in Procreate, esp now 5 has a gradient tool.

Lion Art Studio

thanks greg!

Loish

These "minis" are great! Maybe a booklet or collection like these. I'd pay something extra for a How To... collection. Keep it up!

NYC Sketchbook

so glad you found it useful!! using this tool more has been a huge switch for me too.

Loish

Thank you so much for this! I mostly do my art using traditional mediums but I'm trying to teach myself digital painting in photoshop. These kinds of tutorials are so incredibly useful - I had no idea the lasso could be used in this way. I mostly have just been using the brush tool like Loona Lou. This has totally opened up my digital painting world! I would love more photoshop tutorials down the track if possible. Thank you :) <3

Alex Godwin

I'm late to this. I saved it to my inbox so I could read it when I have time. I knew most of these, but that last one I didn't think of! Very useful. And the application examples :3 Nice!

Niquey

i get what you mean, it took me a while to get used to it because i was used to always having a brush. but i was really struggling with blocking in shapes and getting a sense of shapes with just the brush, so now that i'm more accustomed to this tool, it's really pushing my work forward!

Loish

This is so amazing....how useful this tool can beee!, let's see how it goes with other filters

Bastian Esteban Cruzat Cortes

Is this possible in procreate?

Nat

I know this is such a strong tool but so strange to use for me bc I still draw like in traditional art so often. Just saw many concept artist use this a lot and this kinda blew my mind again. Now here. I guess my quarantine duty is to try finally give this a go 🙈. Thank you for sharing tips on how to use it! 💕

Looona Lou

glad you like it! :)

Loish

This is so great!! Thanks for this! It is so cool to see one tool used is so many different ways

Courtney

Super useful, thank you :)

Kamila

I’m gonna try this!

Brittnie

Ah, I just realized if I pop it out by clicking on it I can zoom in with the scroll wheel. nvm!

FaroreNightclaw

This is really neat! Unfortunately I work in Clip Studio Paint which doesn't, as far as I know, have a feathered selection option, but I feel like a lot of the same looks could be captured with gradients, airbrushes, and blur tools. Only complaint here is that the image is too small to read the settings!

FaroreNightclaw

I always wanted to use lasso tool more, this could be a nice little challenge!

CrimsonTentacles

i don't use the selection tool often in procreate. but i will give it a try and see what comes out of it!

Loish

this is so helpful i love when u do tutorials like these c:

Emilia

i will give it a try and make a little video or resource about it!

Loish

This is AMAZING!!! Even your little samples are so pretty! Oh my goodness! I second what Madhuri said. I am also curious if you found a way to use this technique in Procreate. I can kind of picture how it can be done and I will be playing around with your tutorial today to see if I can make it work. However, I'm incredibly curious about your findings too.

Lylliannah

Thanks for the great tutorial. This is very helpful <333

Nörglerin

Do you find the same process helpful with the selection tool in Procreate?

Madhuri
